I am the editor of the papers of Thomas Jefferson at monticello. We are here today to talk about jefferson and his correspondents. My moderator will be my steamed colleague who handled questions for us. I will turn it over to her. Thanks, jeff. Can you start by telling us what is your role in working with jeffersons correspondents . Im in charge of a project to produce a total of 24 volumes between 1809 in 1826. I work with a total of ten people to do that. Our job is to take jeffersons letters and papers and produce and authoritative addition for those years that will enable future scholars to rely on that and not have to go back to the originals. So then, what exactly do you do as a documentary editor . One of the most important things is to make it clear what we arent. You hear of a documentary editor and you think either that you are creating them documentaries, and we have in fact have people apply for jobs were baffled at ....
Arrives on myself phone and i was a little taken aback i think. I dont know exactly what i expected or what i wanted. I began to study it and i thought, you know what . I think the designer may have done me a favor here in that, yes, jefferson is there. I think you can make out the profile. But its not maybe the first thing you look at. Hes not coming at us full faced straight on invaded living color. In fact, actually the saturated color you see is found in the clothing. I thought, that does encapsulates what i am trying to do with this. Yes, this is about jefferson, but its not your usual biography. We begin with the birth, we hit all the high points and then we end with his death. What i am looking at really is more about the person. I do use the clothing a lot in this study. I thought, okay, this is leading into it very well. I thought, okay, this does work. This is what i need here. The book then is about the jefferson image and how he went about putting this particular image toge ....
I look at you at home a lot. Youve helped us really improve our business by the things you do. We have really had to have an experience with back and forth oh been, closed, up and down, happening with everybody across the country. When we shut down we pivoted right away to online sales but it took a little while for that to happen. We quickly moved ourselves to online sales and began to excel through the online website. In addition to that, we also have added the phone calls, emails, instagram, facebook requests as well, which was really a big surprise for us. My father was the fighting in korea and vietnam and i grew up in that environment and i went to Quantico High School and then went on to the Naval Academy thinking i would be a marine corps officer. After my first year the navy sends everybody out on a cruise and you go out on a ship beautiful cruiser on san diego it was late in the day the sun was setting and and i just wanted to be a sailor at that point so i told my dad and my mom and they were hoping it would be a marine that they got over it years later when i got my first star is that i think that came out okay.
