Earth Day: Pandemic shows small changes can have big impact on air quality, experts say

KSL TV
SALT LAKE CITY — Once a year in a global event, people come together to celebrate the beautiful natural resources we share on Earth Day.
The COVID-19 pandemic has showed us even small changes in our daily routine can have a significant impact on our environment. One outdoorsy Utah couple definitely saw those changes.
Cherry and Donny Hazard are the ultimate adventurers.
"Oh, I love the outdoors so much. I moved to Utah because it's Utah. I love it!" Cherry Hazard explained.
From seeking out breathtaking views in canyons, on mountains and rivers, they do it all.
"(Utah) has everything from the salt flats to the canyon country to red rock to the mountains ... just gorgeous. There's great rivers, there's great lakes," she said. "It's so healing; it's so balancing."

Why the state expanded vaccination criteria to include those with underlying medical conditions

KSL TV
SALT LAKE CITY — While all adults will be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine in just a few weeks, experts say there is a reason those with underlying health conditions are given priority. One Utah kidney transplant shares why he is so grateful he was able to get the shot.
Greg Boss of Holladay is considered high risk. He's been married to his sweetheart for 25 years. Just after they returned from their honeymoon, Boss started to feel ill.
He says his life changed in 2001 when he underwent a kidney transplant at just 34 years old.
"April 12. I can remember the day. It snowed," he said. "My wife's little brother donated one of his kidneys to me and we celebrate 20 years, next month."

What to eat if you've lost your sense of taste due to COVID-19

While losing your sense of taste and smell isn't the most serious symptom of COVID-19, it certainly can be one of the most annoying. One Salt Lake man has found a way to eat healthy and enjoy some food during his slow recovery.

Why a fitness trampoline can offer the perfect at-home workout this winter

KSL TV
SALT LAKE CITY — Finding motivation and the resources to exercise in the winter — especially during a pandemic — can be challenging, but one Utah woman is getting creative and jumping right into it.
Celeste Miller has been running for most of her life. "I love that it just clears your head and gives you those good endorphins — that runner's high," she said. "It really helps with just overall mood stability and stress relief."
But Miller finds running outside during the winter can sometimes be challenging. "You're watching for snow patches or ice patches, and so your pace is a lot slower," she described. "My motivation level goes down. You get home from work, it's dark, it's cold."

Why you should start 'exercise snacking'

AMERICAN FORK — With more people working from home and spending time on virtual calls, it's likely many are sitting for hours on end. One Utah man is breaking up the day through "exercise snacking" — and no, it doesn't involve a trip to the pantry.
Jayden Bell will be the first to admit sitting or standing at a desk all day isn't easy. He used to compete in professional mixed martial arts and was a personal trainer.
"I was extremely active. I was jumping around. I was doing the exercises with everyone … in the class, and that was great. I loved that," he said.

Morgan family warns other parents after almost losing their toddler in a severe choking accident

KSL TV
MORGAN — Choking is one of the leading causes of unintentional death for children under the age of 5, according to the National Safety Council. Intermountain Healthcare physicians are warning parents after 32 alarming choking hazards in Utah last year involving young children. One Morgan family is grateful their toddler is still alive after a harrowing experience last August.
Less than 24 hours after bringing their new baby girl home, Nikelle and Dalan Judd realized their 22-month-old son Maverik was struggling to breathe.
"All of a sudden, I heard Maverik screaming and I could tell something was really wrong," Nikelle recalled, describing his labored breathing as wheezing. "I started just pounding his back seeing if I could just get whatever it was out."

How to set mindful health goals for 2021

PROVO — As we move into the second week of the new year, it's not too late to take a look at your health goals. Rather than focusing on the scale, one Utah woman is taking a different, more mindful approach.
Caryn Allen is a childbirth educator, doula, and mother to four kids. Health has always been a priority for her. "It's just about working with your body to do what's best for your body," she explained.
Rather than choosing to diet this year, Allen was extra mindful in setting her health goals for the new year.
"I don't do well with the mindset of, 'I'm going to do this thing so I can lose weight.' It just doesn't work," she said. "What works best for me is … focusing on a lifestyle of health rather than 'I'm just doing this because I want to lose weight and it's miserable.'"

2021 is the perfect time to set meaningful goals, psychiatrists say

KSL TV
SALT LAKE CITY — Many of us dread making New Year's goals, but this year presents a special opportunity.
When times became tough, a Utah family dug deep and found it's shaping their intentions for 2021.
They were faced with a role that strikes fear into the hearts of many parents: home-school teacher.
"The thought of that was a little bit daunting," said Tara Bekker, a mother of five kids ranging in age from 4-14, who lives in Millcreek. "I have a friend who homeschooled all six of her children and I was one of those moms who said, 'You're crazy. I could never do that, for my sanity.'"

Utah family finds ways to embrace a slower holiday season despite change in traditions

KSL TV
SALT LAKE CITY — This holiday season looks very different for many families, without many of the usual traditions. But different isn't always a bad thing. One Utah family has found a way to enjoy the slower pace this December.
This time of year is usually filled with the hustle and bustle of the season. "Lots of choir concerts, orchestra concerts, band concerts, piano recitals, and lots of basketball tournaments … neighborhood parties and ward parties and all kinds of family parties," Angelina listed.
"Sometimes it does get overwhelming because it's like, 'OK, we have three things tonight and we have to get everything in," she added.

Utah woman creates 'love notes in the snow' for people she can't visit during the pandemic

KSL TV
SALT LAKE CITY — Sometimes it takes a little bit of creativity to show our family and friends how much we love them when we can't see them in person this year due to the pandemic. One Utah woman found a way to send the message loud and clear in nature.
Sheryl McGlochlin is on a mission. "There's so many people who are either sick or can't get up here," she said. "I just wanted to find a way that I could let them know that I love them. I'm thinking about them."
She took me up Millcreek Canyon to show me how it's done. "The snow is like my canvas. I have like a white sheet of paper," she explained.
