Hadong brews Korean tea for the world

An old folk song from Hadong County in South Gyeongsang Province evinces the importance of tea in Korean culture. It goes like this: the first budding tea leaves are for the local governor, those from the next round of budding are for parents and those from the last budding of the season are for husbands; then, keep the withered old leaves separately as they come in handy to make medicine for children when they have tummy aches, hoping they grow up healthy and one day lead the remote, mountainous village.

My favorite time of the year

When the sweltering heat, humidity and heavy rains give way to the crisp air of autumn, even though it comes with a few warm and cool days, I enjoy my daily walks more than ever. The brisk air makes me move quickly and get in my 10,000 daily steps with great joy. The change of color is also welcome. I love Korea's verdant hills and mountains, thickly forested (thanks to former President Park Chung-hee's aggressive tree-planting) with all kinds of trees.

How bears, old waterwheel helped Hadong County mountain villages go carbon-free

HADONG, South Gyeongsang Province - As the guide at Bear Village makes beckoning sounds into her microphone, two large Asian black bears emerge sluggishly from their abode inside a concrete cubical structure. One female bear, aged 21 (147 years old in human age, according to Choi Da-hee, the guide), approaches the foot of the eight-meter-high wooden observatory deck in the middle of the compound and stands on her hind legs to figure out what is on the deck.

Seoul children, parents discover fun in countryside amid COVID-19

GURYE, South Jeolla Province - Several teachers of Jungdong Elementary School, deep in the countryside of South Jeolla Province, are busy setting up three barbecues at the school's front entrance. A few steps up and to the right of the entrance is an indoor gymnasium, inside are 10 outdoor camping tents, which fill up the room - a somewhat weird place to pitch a tent. The school, a two-storied structure with about 10 classrooms, contains four cardboard boxes each filled with snacks and plastic bags full of fruits and vegetables and other produce, which are located on the first floor next to the Teachers' Office. All in preparation for a school camping experience event scheduled to take place later that night on Friday, Oct. 21.
