Authorities at Petroglyph National Monument said Friday that visitors committed extensive vandalism by collecting rocks and stacking them in the form of cairns, sometimes used as a hiking trail marker.
The federally protected park was created to preserve rock designs scratched by Ingenious people starting at least 700 years ago, and Spanish settlers as far back as 400 years ago.
Venturing off trails and rearranging rocks in modern times is a violation of federal regulations.
“Moving, stacking, or making shapes out of rocks is a form of vandalism and will impact every visitor who comes after,” said Park Superintendent Nancy Hendricks, asking visitors to “respect these sacred landscapes.”

Kewanee Public Library
Summer Reading Program – June 1 through July 10
Get ready for our Summer Reading Program June 1st through July 10th! Last year, we debuted our online version of the Children’s and Young Adult Summer Reading Programs using the Beanstack app.  This year, the adults get to join in on the fun.  All of our reading programs will have an online version available through the Beanstack App, which allows you to track your reading goals, all from the convenience of your phone.  No longer will you have to worry about losing a paper log.  Paper logs are, of course, still available for any of our less-technologically inclined.  Whichever you prefer, we have worked hard to make sure you have the exact same experience.

Dec. 13, 1920
A large audience, including many persons from the county, attended a public meeting under the Lord's Day Alliance Association in Trinity Reformed chapel yesterday. The purpose of the meeting was to protest against a tendency toward more liberal observance of the Sabbath and strong addresses were delivered. Speaker Dr. Howard A. Kelly referred to the evils of motion pictures and its effect on child life. Many of the pictures, he said, have a most demoralizing effect on young people.
Water will be turned out of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal within a few days, officials of the company announced Saturday thereby closing the 1920 boating season for this inland waterway which has transported 133,413 tons of coal from Cumberland since early spring. Of the total shipments approximately 90,000 tons have gone to Washington, the remainder having been diverted to Williamsport and way points.
