Has Iceland had its last whaling season?

Iceland's last whaler has no plans to stop. But as global demand slows for whale meat, his business may be doomed anyway.

Oil drilling on sensitive New Mexico public lands puts drinking water, rare caves at risk

The Chihuahuan Desert in the Guadalupe Mountains of southern New Mexico is one place where sensitive public lands are being drilled for oil.
At 4.3 miles long, Parks Ranch Cave in southeastern New Mexico is the second longest gypsum cave in the Western Hemisphere. The cave and its multiple branches are among 550 that crisscross a fragile, sinkhole-prone geologic region renowned for Carlsbad Caverns.
Standing in the inky depths of Parks Ranch, I cannot see my hands. The air is a comfortable 52 degrees Fahrenheit, 40 degrees cooler than the Chihuahuan Desert 30 feet above. The quiet is so complete, I want to bottle it and take it home with me to enjoy later.

White clouds float over an empty field in Upper River Breaks National Monument in Montana. Hundreds of different birds, mammals, and fish exist in their natural state in this wilderness area spanning more than 375,000 acres.
In an executive order issued on January 27 to address the climate crisis, President Joe Biden ordered a pause on new oil and gas leases on public lands and created a White House office of environmental justice. He also quietly committed his administration to an ambitious conservation goal—to protect 30 percent of U.S. land and coastal seas by 2030.

At the end of the 2020 breeding season in August, researchers counted some 112 Florida grasshopper sparrows in the wild.
Ashleigh Blackford has seen her share of dramatic bird releases over the years. She vividly recalls California condors soaring high into the sky and San Clemente loggerhead shrikes fluttering free. The tiny Florida grasshopper sparrow, on the other hand, merely hopped out of an open screen and skittered along the ground, says Blackford, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist.

Oceanic shark and ray populations have collapsed by 70 percent over 50 years

Oceanic shark and ray populations have collapsed by 70 percent over 50 years

On the high seas, far from any continent, sharks and rays were once abundant. Shortfin makos, the fastest sharks on the planet, chased after their prey at speeds of over 20 miles an hour. Scalloped hammerheads plied the waters, scanning the ocean expanse for food with their wide-set eyes and other specialized sensory organs.
These animals traveled widely across open waters so vast and inaccessible that many fishermen, and even some biologists, found it hard to believe that overfishing would ever endanger them.
“A decade ago,” recalls Nicholas Dulvy, co-chair of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Shark Specialist Group, “we would have extremely heated debates about listing an oceanic shark as threatened.”
