President Joe Biden nominates Miami University professor to National Council on the Humanities Madeline Mitchell, Cincinnati Enquirer President Joe Biden has nominated Miami University professor and Myaamia Center Executive Director Daryl Baldwin to the National Council on the Humanities, the White House announced Wednesday. The council advises the National Endowment for the Humanities chairman and consists of 26 members, each appointed by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Members serve staggered six-year terms, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities website. Baldwin is a leader in Native American language and cultural revitalization who won a MacArthur Fellowship award in 2016. He is a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and has dedicated his life s work to revive the Myaamia language. ....

For so many tribes, the survival of their languages is important to preserving culture and history for future generations, and the prospect that many older citizens could be impacted by the pandemic sent tribal leaders into action. But the roots of this plan actually predate coronavirus. Cherokee Nation Chief of Staff Todd Enlow said the effort to identify both fluent and conversationally proficient speakers started in the 2010s, which revealed that less than 1% of Cherokees spoke the language. While larger tribes like the Cherokee Nation and the Chickasaw Nation have active programs in place to preserve their languages, a powerful virus could threaten the continuation of those traditions. ....
