States gear up as Nigeria gets 3.9 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine Nigeria on Tuesday received 3.94 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID – 19 vaccine. The vaccine was received through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Assess Facility (COVAX). COVAX, an initiative co-led by the Vaccine Alliance, GAVI and the World Health Organisation seeks to ensure equitable access to a COVID – 19 vaccine by dividing about two billion doses across 92 low-and middle-income countries. Nigeria is the third African country to benefit from the COVAX facility after Ghana and Ivory Coast. The COVID – 19 vaccines arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja aboard the Boeing 777 300 ER aircraft of the Emirates Airline at 11.45am. ....
Punch Newspapers Sections State governments, except Lagos and Oyo, are not making independent plans to procure COVID-19 vaccine, officials told The PUNCH on Sunday. Officials of states including Plateau, Delta, Ekiti, Gombe, Cross River and Bauchi, in separate interviews with The PUNCH, said they had not made any plan to buy the vaccine, rather they would depend on allocations from the Federal Government. But Lagos and Oyo states, had two weeks ago, told our correspondents that they were making independent plans to buy doses of COVID-19 vaccine, in addition to the allocations expected from the Federal Government. As most states failed to make their own plans for the vaccine, the Federal Government on Sunday blamed politics and logistics due to no fault of Nigeria for the delay in the arrival of the vaccine in country. ....

Nigeria may not get COVID-19 vaccine –Physician Tessy Igomu As Nigeria awaits the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines, a public health physician, Dr. Tuyi Mebawondu, says the country may not get any of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. According to Mebawondu, over 60 per cent of vaccines produced have already been bought by western countries through advanced purchase agreements that give them automatic access as the vaccines are being produced. Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, the physician said the U.S. is already negotiating another round of 200 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, noting that this might further deprive African countries access.
