Discrepancies over responsibility for their rescue underscore political disputes over responding to crisis at U.S. southwestern border

The drownings of three Mexican migrants in the Rio Grande has deepened a jurisdictional dispute between the U.S. federal and Texas state governments.

The Border Patrol recorded more than 177,000 arrests in August, according to The Washington Post, roughly a 30% increase from 132,652 migrants detained in July.
