Ohio Senate clears GOP-crafted budget with some contentious policy changes

The Republican-dominated Ohio Senate has cleared its version of the state's operating budget along party lines with a nearly $86 billion price tag. The budget that passed the Senate Thursday tackles funding for universal school vouchers, income tax cuts and public assistance programs, among hundreds of other provisions. It's also stuffed with contentious policy changes not usually present in the spending blueprint. Republicans tout the budget as returning money to Ohio's citizens, but spending cuts to childcare, public education, food banks and affordable housing are prompting Democrats and advocates in those fields to deem the budget “heartless.” ....

Ohio ban on transgender youth sports, heath care clears House panel

An Ohio legislative proposal would ban transgender student-athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, and would prohibit minors from receiving gender-affirming care. The multifaceted proposal cleared an Ohio House panel Wednesday. The measure folds together two highly-contentious bills in the Republican-dominated House. It would would require K-12 schools and universities to designate “separate teams” for male and female sexes. It would ban transgender girls from participating on girls' sports. Additionally, it would prohibit minors from undergoing puberty blockers and other hormone therapies as well as any gender-reassignment surgery. New voting districts could change again in some states before the 2024 elections

More changes could be coming to voting districts in some states. The 2022 elections marked the first using new districts for Congress and state capitols that were drawn from updated census data. But they could be short-lived in some places. That's because court challenges could force some states to redraw districts again before the 2024 elections. The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a ruling that Alabama's congressional districts should be redrawn to enhance Black voting strength. That ruling also could lead to new House districts in Louisiana, and potentially Georgia. Some other places in line for new districts include New York, North Carolina and Ohio. ....
