Chesapeake Energy Corp.’s $7.4 billion takeover of Southwestern Energy Co. has been delayed until the second half of the year after antitrust regulators demanded more details from the natural gas operators.
Chesapeake is currently operating nine rigs (five in the Haynesville and four in the Marcellus) and four frac crews (two in each basin). Given current market dynamics, the company plans to defer placing wells on production while reducing rig and completion activity.

By combining high-quality, large-scale acreage in Appalachia and Haynesville, the pro forma company has current net natural gas production of approximately 7.9 Bcfd, with more than 5,000 gross locations and 15 years of inventory.
The acquisition would make Chesapeake’s gas production larger than its biggest rival, EQT Corp., and expand its holdings in two key gas drilling regions: the Marcellus basin in Appalachia and the Haynesville basin in Louisiana and East Texas.
