Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) are air pollutants that harm human health. This study aims to identify BTEX concentrations before the lockdown known as the Movement Control Order was imposed (BMCO), during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO), and then during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO). These orders were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. The study utilised data measured by the continuous monitoring of BTEX using online gas chromatography instruments located at three urban area stations. The results showed that the BTEX concentrations reduced by between −38% and −46% during the MCO compared to the BMCO period. The reduction of human mobility during the MCO and CMCO influenced the lower BTEX concentrations recorded at a station within the Kuala Lumpur area. The results of the BTEX diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis showed that the major source of BTEX, especially during the BMCO and CMCO periods, was motor vehicle emissions. Further investigation, using correlation analysis and polar plots, showed that the BTEX concentrations were also influenced by meteorological variables such as wind speed, air temperature and relative humidity.

trade deficit in services increased to 47.4
billion RM (11.5 billion USD) in 2020, the highest deficit ever recorded, owing
to the unprecedented
COVID-19 pandemic that has significantly restrained
economic activities globally.
The Department of Statistics
Malaysia (DOSM) said total trade in services
amounted to 232.7 billion RM, contributing 16.1 percent of gross domestic
product (GDP at current prices) last year.
Exports of services declined to 92.6 billion RM from 170.2 billion RM in the
preceding year following disruption in key services components, namely travel
and transport.
Similarly, imports of services decreased to 140.1 billion RM from 181.1 billion

Home Ministry directs enforcement agencies to step up monitoring operations | Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — All departments and enforcement agencies under the Home Ministry (KDN) have been instructed to increase the number of monitoring operations and take stern action against individuals violating the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the Movement Control Order (MCO).
In a statement, the ministry said that apart from increasing the number of personnel and roadblocks, monitoring would also be carried out nationwide, including at business and industrial premises.
It added that monitoring would also be conducted at office buildings, residential areas, terminals and public transport stations like KTM Komuter, LRT, MRT, ERL, KL Monorail as well as through e-hailing services.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 ― Putrajaya can afford to transfer as much as RM2,200 in cash directly into the pockets of struggling poor families and the self-employed whose incomes are again threatened by a third movement control order (MCO), said one economist.
The third MCO has reignited debate between progressive and hawkish economists over the need for additional government spending, with the former arguing the government could afford to raise borrowings while the latter harps on a growing deficit.
