Garcia: Why Von Dohlen lacks the temperament to serve on City Council FacebookTwitterEmail A couple of years ago, Roger Legrand reluctantly met with Patrick Von Dohlen for breakfast. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss whether Legrand, a political consultant and former City Council aide, wanted to run the 2019 council campaign for Von Dohlen, a financial adviser and culture-wars crusader. Legrand was reluctant for a variety of reasons. Although Legrand leans conservative, he had reservations about Von Dohlen’s brand of social conservatism. More for you Over the years, Von Dohlen who is currently locked in a City Council runoff with District 9 incumbent John Courage and his San Antonio Family Association have directed their fire at gays and lesbians, Planned Parenthood and local arts organizations.
District 1 Longtime Councilman Roberto Treviño will go head-to-head with challenger Mario Bravo after the two were frontrunners in the six-candidate race. This term would be Treviño’s last eligible one as he has held the seat since 2014. Bravo previously campaigned for Bexar County Commissioner, but lost out to Paul Elizondo. In the May 1 election, Treviño led with 44.9 percent of the vote, while Bravo secured 33.6 percent. District 2 Incumbent Jada Andrews-Sullivan will need to head to the runoff election to hold on to her seat. She secured 16.8 percent of all votes, while challenger Jalen McKee-Rodriguez pulled ahead with 26.4 percent. The two were leaders in the 12-candidate race. This would be Andrews-Sullivan’s second term. In 2019, the District 2 race also led to a runoff, in which Andrews-Sullivan came out over Keith Toney.

Editorial: In District 9, Courage has the right stuff Express-News Editorial Board FacebookTwitterEmail The election of John Courage in District 9 was one of the most surprising local outcomes in recent years, because a conservative district chose as its representative one of San Antonio’s most prominent progressives. But anyone thinking Courage would be a predictable progressive firebrand who’d flame out after one term would be surprised. He’s been pragmatic, centrist and responsive. The Air Force veteran and retired teacher’s consistent emphasis on constituent services and seeking pragmatic solutions to problems is why we recommend him for a third term.
