"I guess, in a pandemic, this is what you call nightlife": Scenes from the epic, 32-hour Doses After Dark overnight vaccine clinic in Peel

This past weekend, Peel Region hosted Canada’s first overnight vaccination clinic. On Saturday night, hundreds drove to the International Centre minutes away from Toronto’s very quiet Pearson Airport to participate in what one person described as “a vaccine rave.” Music blasted from the speakers outside and inside. Television screens flashed live updates on how many doses had been administered. And each person left the clinic with some swag: a T-shirt that said “This is our shot,” Rocky Mountain chocolate, Tim Horton’s coffee or a goodie bag from the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives. Over the course of 32 hours, there were guest appearances from Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie and Premier Doug Ford. And the region’s chief medical officer of health, Lawrence Loh, scrubbed in to personally vaccinate some of the residents he serves.

Toronto's Contact Photography Festival expands its takeover of public spaces

The Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival returns to Toronto in May, when it celebrates its 25th anniversary. “We’ve supported tens of thousands of artists over that time; we had 1.4 million two years ago,” says executive director Darcy Killeen, who tries to get to every exhibition and project opening—as many as 200 in some years—on his trusty bike.
Though the pandemic seriously impacted last year’s festival, it did go ahead but largely shifted to online. “Only about a third of the 186 shows actually opened,” Killeen says. The Contact gallery and office at its festival hub on Spadina Avenue stayed shut, with staff working remotely, but the move brought some benefits. “Last year was a great opportunity to do some new online things, which we’d never done before,” says Bonnie Rubenstein, Contact’s artistic director. “It’s helping us to reimagine the possibilities.”

Black History Month | Orangeville Citizen

MPP SYLVIA JONES
FROM QUEENS PARK
The month of February is Black History Month: an important opportunity to celebrate Black culture and mark the significant contributions made by Black Ontarians to the success of our province and our country. It also provides a time to shine a light on injustices in our past and present.
Last year we welcomed a new community website: Dufferin County Canadian Black Association – https://dufferincountycba.org  – whose mission includes a platform to provide leadership for the continued development and enhancement of the Black community through civic engagement, education, programs and services and to advocate for equity and wellbeing for the Black community in Dufferin County. This is a valued resource for many individuals and families who are watching our communities grow. DCCBA has already hosted virtual events and has a number of events lined up that focusses on outreach, education and leadership. On February 20th, DCCBA is partnering with the Museum of Dufferin (MoD) to host an on-line panel that will discuss opportunities for our community to come together as a unified force, and what this means for our future. I look forward to join the panel for this discussion. Find out more information and get the link to the live stream at: https://www.dufferinmuseum.com/event/bhm/

Brampton photographer's work featured in Black History Month celebration at PAMA – Repeating Islands

“A lot of times, Black females, they go unrecognized on many skills in different industries,” said the Brampton portrait photographer, whose work is being featured in the celebration of Black History Month at the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA).
“To be part of that history and to be a part of doing the work I am, archiving these women, it’s important for Black female creatives to be image-makers and tell their own story.”

When the Night Stirred at Sea: Contemporary Caribbean Art.
The virtual exhibition, which is on at PAMA until February 21, brings together works by several English Caribbean artists working at home (Trinidad and Jamaica) and in the Diaspora (Canada, USA and the UK) and explores a variety of urgent and common themes of identity, colonization, as well as social activism and justice that connect all of us.javascript:” html head https://securepubads.g.doubleclick.net/tag/js/gpt.js /head body div id ’proper-ad-insauga_content_2′ /div /body /html ”
