The Teacher and the Student: Mike Coleman and Shannon Hardin
Mike Coleman is the most successful Black political leader in Columbus history. His career provided a road map for his protégé, Shannon Hardin. Then the world changed.

The two men stand next to one another, each dressed in blue suit jackets and white shirts, standard politician attire. One is the 66-year-old former mayor of Columbus, the first Black man to fill the role, whose 16-year tenure transformed the city. The other is his 33-year-old protégé, the first Black gay man to serve as City Council president, whose career is still taking shape.

Columbus is creating a safety plan for Mount Vernon Avenue

Mount Vernon Avenue runs through the heart of the King-Lincoln-Bronzeville neighborhood. It is home to small stores and pharmacies, houses and a barber shop.
It's also been home to speeders and the scene of many crashes, making it dangerous at times not only for motorists, but also for pedestrians and bicyclists as the neighborhood near Downtown continues to become more popular with developers and new residents.
So the city of Columbus is embarking on a plan to make the Mount Vernon Avenue corridor safer.
"Over the past couple of years, we've been concerned about crashes at some intersections and speeding in the corridor," said Reynaldo Stargell, administrator of the city's traffic management division.

'A symbol of hope': The history behind Columbus' Poindexter Village and the fight to preserve it

Poindexter Village was one of the first public housing projects in the United States.

As new people and places move into Columbus' Near East Side, two historic buildings remain, marking the future site of the Poindexter Village Museum and Cultural Center.
Ohio History Connection and James Preston Poindexter Foundation partnered to preserve the legacy of the village that was one of the first public housing projects in the United States.
The History
Poindexter Village got its name from Columbus abolitionist, activist, and politician Rev. James Preston Poindexter. A barber by trade, Rev. Poindexter was the first African American elected to the city council and the school board. To many at the time, he symbolized hope.

Black History Month: Stories on Columbus activists, events, businesses

Dealing with inequities
As soon as psychologist Whitney Raglin Bignall steps into a new patient’s room at the primary-care clinic where she works, she sometimes sees a bit of tension ease in the nervous parents and children staring back at her.
Their shy smiles of hello might suddenly reach up toward their eyes, their shoulders might relax a little once the invisible weight of history lifts from them.
Only about 5% of practicing psychologists are Black, and that number is even lower when it comes to those who specialize in pediatric care, as Raglin Bignall does.
During this Black History Month — which falls after a year racial reckonings across the country and amid a pandemic in which Black Americans are nearly three times more likely to die than others — experts say speaking openly about mental wellness in minority communities may be more important than ever.

Bill would designate Depression Era public housing Poindexter Village as Ohio historic site

A bill that would designate the former Poindexter Village housing project as a state historic site is being introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Near East Side development in 1940, one of the first public housing projects in the country.
State Rep. Dontavius Jarrells, D-Columbus, will be introducing the legislation later this week.
"As one of Columbus’ most historic neighborhoods, Poindexter Village was a thriving oasis of music, art, and culture for so many Black families,” Jarrells said in a statement on Monday. “Designating Poindexter Village as a historical site with the Ohio History Connection ensures the history of this beautiful community will never be forgotten."
