The National Film Institute – Hungary (NFI) was established in January 2020 as the successor of the Hungarian National Film Fund, and Barnabás Tóth s historical drama Those Who Remained / Akik maradtak, produced by Inforg-M&M Film, got on the short list in the Academy Awards International Feature Film category. The film didn t make it into the nominations list and with the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic the Hungarian film industry faced serious challenges. Luckily, there was also good news. Kornel Mundruczó s first English language film Pieces of a Woman, produced by BRON Studios (Canada) in coproduction witth Little Lamb (Canada) and Proton Cinema (Hungary), was invited into the main competition of the Venice Film Festival, and it is among the Academy Awards 2021 contenders for a nomination in various categories. ....

A cerebral mystery thriller told by an unreliable narrator in a fugue of emotional dislocation, writer-director Lili Horvat s Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time puts a lightly feminist spin on classic screen tropes about hysterical wronged women driven by romantic obsession and fatal attraction. Selected as Hungary s official submission to the Academy Awards, this haunting slow-burn psychodrama is superbly acted and quietly gripping, despite some minor plot wobbles and that cumbersome title, which Horvat borrowed from an early 1970s underground theater play. Premiered to politely positive reviews in Venice and Toronto last year, the film launches digitally in the U.S. this Friday, Jan 22. ....

The total gross of Hungarian films was 838 million HUF / 2.3 million in EUR in 2019, but fell to 320.1 million HUF / 888,126 EUR in 2020. The admissions dropped from 595,587 to 224,763. The number of domestic premieres also decreased, from 26 to 16. The 2020 was a nightmare for Hungarian film theatres, which had to close two times because of the pandemic, first on 11 March followed by a reopening during the second half of June. Operations had to be suspended again on 11 November. Cinemas were closed for five months, and it s uncertain when they will be able to reopen. ....
