locals here are used to snow. they say they haven't seen a storm like this in quite a while. warnings went up as the snow came down across the northeast. big flakes fell in western pennsylvania and at the opposite end of the state, we found travelers surprised at the storm's intensity. do you remember the last time it snowed? >> no. not like this. it's bad. >> reporter: the storm has been marching east, blanketing arkansas, including this bridge where several tractor-trailers collided. communities in the northeast have been preparing for days. crews readying plows and pre-treating roads. >> this is their super bowl. they live for the big storms. this is our first big storm so we're excited. >> reporter: boston could get a half foot of snow in parts of new england could get double that. the storm could end a snowfall drought in several northeast cities, including new york. cities could see an inch or more, an amount not seen for almost two years. >> we're expecting our operation will largely be focused on

we're getting big snow in parts of the northeast. areas like new york city, it is rain for you guys. we'll continue to see the rain, the snow, the wind overnight and into tomorrow morning. by tomorrow afternoon, things begin to waned down. still some interior snow for parts of the northeast. the heaviest snow focused along the i-81 corridor and points east. big cities like new york and philadelphia missing out on this one. then the next system waiting in the wings. this is going to be a powerhouse storm. significant severe weather along the gulf coast. heavy snow, blizzard conditions possible in the plains, but very warm into the northeast, and rain. a lot of rain coming for areas that have just seen some snow. so there is a significant concern, unfortunately, already several days out. tuesday into wednesday, we could be looking at likely flooding in the northeast. >> thanks, alex wilson. and weather is to blame for a deadly and massive 35-vehicle pileup on an interstate highway in california. two people were killed and nine

steve harrigan, thank you. meanwhile, president trump thanking the bahamian prime minister for emphasizing the united states help in rescue efforts after hurricane dorian left unprecedented damage on its major islands. the coast guard stepping up response efforts as the frantic search for survivors continues. mark meredith live at the white house with more. mark? >> good evening, jon. president trump says the u.s. is willing to help the bahamas as they recover from hurricane dorian. the president put out a tweet about the storm early this morning. this is what he had to say, quote, thank you to bahamian prime minister for your very gracious and kind words in saying that without the help of the united states and me, there would have been many more casualties. the president in that tweet also praised fema as well as the u.s. coast guard for their efforts to help save lives. here at the white house, the president has nothing on his public schedule for the weekend, but we know he has his mind focused on the economy and trade talks because he's been talking a lot about that on twitter and in a video released on-line.

felt here, and of course the wave action up to 30 plus feet across the atlantic ocean. so now the impacts here going across halifax, new brunswick, up towards corner brook here, newfoundland, we are looking at the impacts to be on the high side with storm surge and a great deal of wave action, but finally, after it seems to be days and days and days that we have been seeing this storm kind of pound the east coast and now getting up and out to sea, eventually, but even still, a cat 1 hurricane is possible here as we head into your sunday morning wake-up, into newfoundland here. that will be the big impact as we roll forward. as it gets into cooler waters, it will eventually diminish here into monday morning but to think how long this storm has been going on. it's not just dorian, though. keep in mind, we have the entire atlantic here that continues to be pretty active. so these are other zones, gabriel there, good news, diminishing as the storm itself. tropical wave to the south. and then we also have other

governor roy cooper toured the damage by helicopter and on the ground, while acknowledging the extent of the damage, he commended the people on their resilience and their generosity. >> we're grateful for this community that's reaching out to help each other. people who saw this on tv came from different parts of the state here just to help people put their lives back together. >> off the coast, first responders are shuttling supplies to ocracoke island. this is a remote community with no bridges to the mainland. an estimated 800 residents chose not to follow evacuation orders during the hurricane, a 7 foot storm surge caused significant flooding. the coast guard medevaced three ocracoke residents who were experiencing health problems. also transported an additional three who simply wanted to leave the island. throughout the storm, power outages was a major problem. yesterday they peaked at somewhere over 200,000 customers without electricity. that figure is now down to below
