On Thursday, House Republicans will convene the first hearing of an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden that is based in large part on a long-debunked right-wing media conspiracy theory.  Then-Vice President Biden, who played a lead role in U.S. policy toward Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of that country in 2014, warned its leaders including then-President Petro Poroshenko that the U.S. would withhold $1 billion in promised loan guarantees if they did not dismiss Viktor Shokin, Ukraine’s prosecutor general, during a December 2015 visit to Kyiv. Shokin was subsequently forced from office in March 2016.
