Bizarre wartime harvest of mind-altering, blood-staunching fungus

Ergots form from the fungus Claviceps purpurea and occur in summer when the scierotia develop on the seedheads of many grasses and cereals. Farmers in this country have long appreciated that ergot-infested grass and hay can cause lameness and general ill-health if ingested in large quantities by stock. This is because ergot is full of alkaloids.
You could never imagine it being allowed to happen today. Rural schoolkids sent out to roam their roadsides to pick seed heads with known hallucinogenic properties.
But it was one way many rural New Zealand schools responded to the war effort during World War II, sending out their pupils to collect ergot, a tiny seed head-borne fungus well known not only for its mind-altering properties, but its remarkable ability to stop bleeding.

It's wild and windy but, if you have feathers, Farewell Spit is prime real estate, writes Elen Turner
Most people who have flown between the North and South Islands on a clear day will have seen the 25km sandspit reaching into the Tasman Sea. Farewell Spit forms the northern boundary of Golden Bay, and setting foot there feels like being on the edge of the Earth. It practically is.

A global pandemic and the virtual destruction of a rare bird colony has not deterred a group creating an ecosanctuary on the northernmost tip of the South Island.

Guests at the opening ceremony take a walk through the sanctuary at Cape Farewell.
It was hoped to have new new seabirds roosting at the sanctuary by now, but Covid-19 set back plans for the re-introduction last year of a variety of seabirds that were once there in abundance.
The sanctuary was formed through a partnership between HealthPost Nature Trust, Manawhenua ki Mōhua and the Department of Conservation.

A new year with old freedom camping issues in Golden Bay

“At Waitapu, people were asleep [in their vehicles] then you see them get up and use the long drop toilet.”
At Taupata, three vehicles displayed a self-contained sticker. Despite being removed as an official camping spot under the amended council bylaw, Taupata is a road reserve meaning self-contained vehicles cannot be banned.
Eckman questioned whether all the vehicles with stickers were actually self-contained.
He said the amount of vehicles at the sites ranged from a few to more than a dozen, varying from day to day and time of day.
“The numbers always vary because people come and go.”
Eckman said at Taupata the council had a legal responsibility to protect shore birds, including godwits, South Island pied oystercatchers, white-fronted terns and banded dotterels which roosted there.

Freedom campers 'killing' Golden Bay's small campgrounds

Marina and Karl Adams of Takaka Camping and Cabins, at their empty campgrounds. The couple say freedom camping has almost driven them out of business, and they welcome the changes to the new bylaw, which closed two of Golden Bay's only designated freedom camping sites for non-self-contained vehicles.
Freedom camping is “killing” small campgrounds, a Golden Bay owner says.
“No matter how much we charge, we can’t compete with ‘free’,” said Karl Adams, the owner of Takaka Camping and Cabins.
”Ultimately, freedom camping has killed us.”
The Tasman District Council amended its Freedom Camping Bylaw in early-December, with councillors voting to close controversial sites at Waitapu Bridge and Taupata Reserve.
