Colbert Report and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt writer Meredith Scardino’s sometimes hilarious comedy works best in its flashback moments to the heights of the former girl band’s fame. With its perfectly pitched, pointed – and sometimes black – humour, it reminds one of the Andy Samberg-starring sports mockumentaries 7 Days in Hell and Tour de Pharmacy. Music videos for less-successful songs like Quit Flying Planes at my Heart are a riot, while interviews where the women say things like “we’ve been best friends since we all auditioned for the same man in a New Jersey motel” offer plenty of laughs. But while not all of the modern day, cringe comedy stylings work and the characters can come off a little one-note, there’s enough clever interplay, smart observations and funny lines to keep audiences engaged throughout the eight-episode run.
