This is the first case in Pakistan in which accused persons have been convicted for sharing blasphemous content on social media. The same court also awarded 10 years’ imprisonment to another convict in a blasphemy case. The four individuals were indicted by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on September 12, 2017, when they had pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
ISLAMABAD: In a first, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) of Islamabad on Friday sentenced three men to death for committing blasphemy in the cyberworld. A fourth convict was awarded 10- year imprisonment. The ATC also issued perpetual arrest warrants for four absconding accused. They have been accused of running Facebook pages displaying offensive material. According to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which had investigated the case, Rana Nouman Rafaqat and Abdul Waheed operated fake profiles and disseminated blasphemous material on social media, while Nasir Ahmad uploaded blasphemous videos on a YouTube channel. The verdict was announced by Islamabad ATC Judge Raja Jawad Abbas, who found the three accused guilty of having committed blasphemy.
