MUMBAI: Observing that when a leakage is external, it is the responsibility of the co-operative housing society to fix it, a magistrate’s court convicted a society in Chembur and its chairman and secretary, directing them to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each for ignoring a shop owner’s request to repair the damage for almost a decade.
The fine imposed was the maximum under the law and the court said the leakage would have to be fixed within two months, failing which they would face action, reports Rebecca Samervel.
Atul Cooperative Housing Society, its chairman Arun Baghchi and secretary Alok Sarkar were booked under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act on a complaint from Purnachandra Dasgupta, a resident who owned 3 shops that faced the problem of heavy leakage.

ED arrested Eknath Khadse's son-in-law Girish Chaudhari on Wednesday
MUMBAI: After several hours of questioning through Tuesday, the ED early on Wednesday arrested Girish Chaudhari, son-in-law of the state’s former revenue minister Eknath Khadse, in a money laundering case related to the MIDC land deal in Pune, report Vijay V Singh and Rebecca Samervel.
Chaudhari was produced before a PMLA court, which remanded him in ED custody till July 12. Meanwhile, ED summoned Khadse for a further statement on Thursday. It had recorded his statement earlier in January.
The ED’s case is based on a state Anti-Corruption Bureau FIR that has accused Khadse, his wife Mandakini, Chaudhri and one Abbas Ukani for land grab of a MIDC plot in Bhosari, Pune district, and causing a loss of Rs 61.25 crore to the government by fraudulently entering into a sale deed. The ED probe showed Chaudhari, in connivance with others, entered into a sale deed to avail compensation over 2.5-3 times the actual value of the land. The land originally belonged to Ukani and was reserved for MIDC. There was a legal dispute between Ukani and the government over compensation to surrender the land.

MUMBAI: Observing that “talking sarcastically and taunting by in-laws is part of the wear and tear of married life” that every family witnesses, a sessions court recently granted anticipatory bail to a Malabar Hill couple, aged 80 and 75, who were accused of ill treatment by their estranged daughter-in-law, reports Rebecca Samervel .
The court also refuted the woman’s arguments that their plea should be rejected on the grounds that her in-laws were on the list put together by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists of people who had offshore entities. The court said, “There may be a probe pending under ICIJ, which has no concern while deciding the application.”

Woman loses faith in judge, court shifts case to another bench | India News

MUMBAI: Observing that justice is not only to be done, but it should also be seen to have been done, Dindoshi sessions court’s additional principal judge, in a rare move, has allowed an alleged 26-year-old sexual abuse survivor’s plea to transfer the accused’s anticipatory bail plea to another court room after the woman complained the judge had not even heard the matter before granting him interim relief from arrest, reports Rebecca Samervel.
“In fact, the judge should hear the parties before granting any relief. In the present case, it appears that the intervener (the woman) has lost faith in the judge. So, in my opinion, in order to avoid further complications, it would be just and proper to transfer the anticipatory bail application to any other court. It would not cause any harm to the accused if the matter is transferred to any other court,” the additional principal judge said. Both the prosecution and the accused had opposed the woman’s plea.
