Black History Month banners leaving downtown Port Huron

View Comments
The Black History Month banners in downtown Port Huron may be taken down, but they aren’t disappearing forever.
The flags are decorated with inspirational messages and photographs of Black people who have influenced the community.
“The pictures for sure help to tell the story of African Americans and minorities within the community that make contributions … whether it was through business, government, education,” said Kim Brown, pastor of the Zion Cathedral of Praise Church in Port Huron.
The flags were a joint effort between the NAACP of Port Huron, St. Clair County Organizing for Regional Equity and Awareness, Black Lives Matter and the Community Foundation of St. Clair County.

About thirty people joined a march along Washington Street in Codman Square last Thursday to push for state lawmakers to adopt a bill intended to halt no-fault evictions in the wake of the Covid pandemic.
The event— organized by City Life/Vida Urbana and held despite a heavy rain— highlighted the group’s success in assisting two Dorchester people— Jean Gaspard and Stephania Pierre-Noel— who were facing imminent evictions earlier this year to stay in their homes.

Time is running out to fight climate change, but there are valuable lessons on strategy and tactics that can be learned from the New Deal coalition. | Preston Keres / USDA
You may not know it, but Democrats and Republicans share a growing concern about the climate and environment. With extreme weather events becoming more common, many young Republicans now question their allegiance to a party that denies the reality of climate change. After the destructive environmental policies of the Trump administration, there are high hopes among many Americans that progress will be possible under a new administration—even if Biden’s reluctant to abandon fracking or adopt all the language of a “Green New Deal.”
