NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Gerald Wilson could not believe how he was forced out of the home he'd been renting for three years.
"It's just disgusting that anyone could do anything like this," Wilson said.
It was days before Christmas when the owner suddenly cut off the power.
The single family home in North Nashville was rented by several different tenants who paid weekly.
Icsis Tucker-Roland also lived in the house with her two children.

On Thursday’s Houston Matters: We re-examine renters’ rights in Texas after tenants were left without water for weeks following February's hard freeze.
Also this hour: As we continue to reflect on the one year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic unfolding here in Greater Houston, we discuss the social impact of the past year — from working from home, to virtual classrooms, to not seeing loved ones for extended periods, to wearing masks in public.
Then, social media platforms lit up recently after a video showed a teacher's exasperation as his students demonstrated a lack of knowledge of Helen Keller, among other historical figures. It’s easy to say “kids these days don’t know their history.” So, we meet some who do — participants in the Texas Quiz Bowl.

SNP urged to do more to protect renters and people living in poverty

THE Scottish government has been urged to do more to protect renters and people living in poverty amid concerns over rising rent and unmanageable debt.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was quizzed at Holyrood today about her government’s lack of action on tenant support, with calls for rent controls to be introduced.
Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie highlighted rising poverty during the pandemic, arguing that rent pressure zones, which have not been implemented anywhere in Scotland, had failed.
Mr Harvie said that ministers needed to “show more ambition” in tackling poverty, “whether that means expanding free transport and school meals” or the government “reconsidering its position on public-sector pay.”

Moratorium still protects qualifying Colorado renters from evictions, but landlords finding loopholes, attorney says

Some pandemic-related protections for renters remain in place, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s temporary moratorium on residential evictions.
The program began in September to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It was to have ended Jan. 31, but has been extended by the Biden administration through March 31.
Though the program doesn’t prevent all evictions, it has significantly decreased them in El Paso County.
The Sheriff’s Office completed 502 court-ordered writs of execution in 2020, compared with 1,217 in 2019, said spokeswoman Jacqueline Reed. That's a 59% decrease.
The order gives tenants who are behind in rent payments notice that they have three days to leave the property with their belongings, or deputies will remove their possessions and sell the items for repayment to the landlord.
