Happy Republic Day 2021: Why it is celebrated? History, Importance, Story Behind It
Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 in India, since 1950 to commemorate the Indian Constitution replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. As we celebrate our 72nd Republic Day today, let us know why the day is celebrated, its significance, and importance.
Republic Day History
India obtained its independence on 15 August 1947 though the nation did not have a permanent constitution, instead the country was functional on the laws that were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935. On 29 August 1947, a resolution was moved for the appointment of Drafting Committee for the development of a permanent constitution with Dr B R Ambedkar as chairman. The first draft of the constitution was submitted by the committee to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1947.

NEW DELHI: The 72nd Republic Day celebrations tomorrow will have several firsts and will also miss out on some long-standing traditions for the first time. While the number of visitors, tableaus and participants in the parade will be significantly less this year, the highlights will be the Rafale flypast, a foreign contingent and India’s first woman fighter pilot.
Bangladesh's armed forces contingent to participate
This year, a 122-member contingent from Bangladesh's armed forces will be part of the Republic Day parade. They will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1971 Indo-Pak war that led to the liberation and creation of Bangladesh. This is the first time that a marching contingent from a neighbouring country is being invited to participate in the parade. France has been the other country to feature in a previous year. This will be the third time India will be hosting a foreign contingent to participate in the parade after the French troops in 2016 and the UAE personnel in 2017.

Republic Day 2020: How this year's celebration will be different

Republic Day 2021 will be slightly different on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. The parade will be shorter this year, instead of ending at the Red Fort, it will culminate at National Stadium. However, people will still be able to view the tableaux performance at Red Fort.

Republic Day | Republic Day 2021: History of the day & significance of India becoming a republic

Updated Jan 25, 2021 | 11:47 IST
The day is important in the history of India because it is the day when Indian National Congress made the declaration of complete self-rule/total independence or Poorna Swaraj.
Republic Day 2021: History & Significance
Republic Day honours the date, January 26, 1950, on which The Constitution of India came into effect by replacing the Government of India act (1935).
While India achieved independence from the British Raj in 1947 through the Indian Independence Act 1947, it wasn't until 1950 that we became a sovereign state. Republic Day celebrates the coming into force of India's constitution.
History of the day
The Indian Constitution was drafted by BR Ambedkar, also known as the Architect of Indian Constitution. 26 January was chosen as the date for Republic day because it was on this day in 1930 that the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress as opposed to the Dominion status that was offered by the Britishers.
