The Government’s anti-mask, anti-social-distancing agenda is, in reality, a thinly-veiled policy of herd immunity. It clearly wants to let Covid rip. It is now down to the people of Britain to deny the Government its herd-immunity wish. We should mask up, practise social distancing and generally be cautious to help save human lives from this vicious disease.

SIR – The current Covid infection rate is around 40,000-50,000 per day and still increasing (though the figure is probably higher due to many having no symptoms and therefore not contributing to the daily figures). ....

Royal Yacht Britannia. Wikipedia
The naval architect who designed the Queen Mary 2 likened it to a “1950s fishing trawler,” while a retired admiral sniffed that the plans for it looked like an “oligarch’s yacht.” A Conservative Party grandee ridiculed it as a “complete waste of time, silly populist nonsense.”

The target of all of this venom is Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s latest pet project: a replacement for the royal yacht Britannia, mothballed in 1997. Johnson wants to spend 200 million pounds, or $280 million, to build a new Britannia not as a plaything for the royal family, which has evinced no interest in another yacht, but as a floating brand ambassador for post-Brexit Britain. ....

Ships fit for a Duke of Edinburgh: a history
A brush-up for HMS Duke of Edinburgh, shortly after surviving the Battle of Jutland

This idea has a precedent. The first HMS Duke of Edinburgh was named in accordance with the wishes of King Edward VII, to honour his younger brother Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh following his sudden death in 1900.
In contrast to Prince Philip, who had to abandon his naval career to support the Queen, Prince Alfred was able to pursue his career, which culminated in his appointment as the Commander-in-Chief, Devonport, from 1890 to 1893 in the rank of admiral. He was promoted to admiral of the fleet on June 3 1893 and became the reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha that August. ....
