Killer Louis Fortier learned his fate on Monday. It's the third case retried by the Vt. attorney general's office after the state's attorney refused to prosecute when experts determined the defendants were criminally insane.
BURLINGTON — Louis Fortier, 42, was sentenced on one count of murder in the second degree in Vermont Superior Court, Chittenden Criminal Division. Fortier previously pled no contest in the fatal stabbing of Richard Medina on March 29, 2017, in downtown Burlington. Judge John Pacht presided over the case and sentenced Fortier to 20 years
"The sentence imposed by the Court holds Mr. Fortier accountable for the unlawful killing of Richard Medina, while also acknowledging Mr. Fortier’s continued need for significant mental health treatment," according to a memo on the sentencing from Attorney General Charity Clark's office.
Louis Fortier was sentenced on Monday for murder in the stabbing death of Richard Medina, 43, on Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace in March 2017. The plea deal will keep him in the state psychiatric hospital for the “foreseeable future” and potentially the rest of his life.
