layoffs. assistant labor secretary jane oates posted this notification. as we first reported, 46 days ago, the law called the warn act, requires that mass layoffs be announced to employees 60 days beforehand. we re talking about mass layoffs threatening the defense industry. since tt sequester cuts take effect on january 2 snd. what that initially meant that announcement at the big defense contractors would go out november 3rd, as you can see that s three days before the presidential election. obviously those are not headlines that obama wants. so enter the labor department. here s the letter. oates writes, quote, the warn act notice to employees of federal contractors including in the defense industry is not required 60 days in advance of january 2, 2013 and would be inappropriate. yes. the administration is reinterpreting the law on the sly. because after all this was sent out and they declined to make anyone available to interview this tonight. of course this was a m ....

right now mitt romney s on his way home from an overseas trip his campaign is calling a great success even though it generated embarrassing headlines at every stop. latest came today in poland when one of romney s top aides cursed at reporters asking questions. one of them was our jim acosta, who joins us from warsaw. jim, what happened today that the romney team sounds upbeat despite all that s been going on? reporter: well, joe, a senior romney advisor told reporters here in warsaw that mistakes do happen out on the campaign trail. but when asked what mistakes were made on this overseas trip, that advisor couldn t name any. instead the campaign says the world got to hear from a candidate who they say speaks from the heart. it s the image mitt romney has wanted voters to see for the last week. the gop contender walking tall on the world stage here visiting poland s tomb of the unknown soldier and later praising the soviet black country for escaping the iron curtain. ....

good evening, everyone. i m erin burnett. outfront tonight, the big scare. with just four days in the congress high tails it out of washingt washington, there was plenty of talk about the looming consequences of the looming fiscal cliff. we re talking about tax cuts expiring for everyone automatically, payroll taxes going up, emergency unemployment benefits ending and, of course, the $1.2 trillion in so-called sequestration cuts. about half of that sum is going to come from defense. the obligation of the commander in chief is to act like the commander in chief, and that would be to prevent these cuts, which in the words of his own secretary of defense, would devastate our national security. interesting, acting like a commander in chief, because a lot of the previous commanders in chief have done a lot more than barack obama may be about to do. we ve certainly been here before. former president ronald reagan during his second term cut defense spending by about 10%. ....

and other places. i ve seen the horrible things they ve done overseas and in this country as weapon. later in the broadcast, we re going to look at the role foreign jihadists are playing in syria right now. i m not defending radical islamists nor am i naive to their beliefs. but what i am talking about is people working in this government making allegations or spreading innuendos about them without any direct evidence. they re dragging people s names and reputations through the mud. here are the five people we are talking about, michele bachmann, trent franks and others. newt gingrich refers to the others as the national security five. he blames american elites for being blinded to the political threat. it verges on a psychosis. he goes on, the national security five are doing their duty and asking difficult questions designed to make america safer. we think you deserve a look at the people they ve been targeting and the tactics they ve been using. they ve named these t ....
