By walking to the North Pole, Robert Edwin Peary became one of the world’s most honored men. Born on May 6. 1886, in Cresson, Penn., Peary arrived in Maine three years later, after the death of his father. He and his mother settled in her native South Portland. From then on he claimed to be ” a man of Maine.” At the age of 20, Peary graduated from Bowdoin College, second in his class and the first in engineering. In the early part of his life, he worked as an engineer.
