he just spend $5,000 on day on protective security because of january 6th. -- one republican congressman confided to romney that he wanted to vote for trump's second impeachment, but chose not to out of fear for his family safety. when one senator, a member of leadership, said he was leaning towards voting to convict, the others urged him to reconsider. you can't do that, romney recalled someone saying, think of your personal safety, said another, think of your children. the senator eventually decided they were right. and this extends past people that are at the upper echelons of political power. test politicians or public officials. more than just they have been subjected to this intimidation. election officials, even rioters, just people with opinions. conservative writer and trump critic, david french, has recounted how they went after him. >> in individual calls he said, i'm sorry, but i've been asked by the trump campaign to make

moment. president obama, you need to get your game face on. and it's not about your legacy, it's about the middle class of america and moving our country forward and i think president biden has done a lot of good things. but he has to talk to the american people. even the attack last night, he needs to go in front of the american people and let them know what we did. >> in your reference, it is interesting, president obama was being beaten by romney, and of course he course corrected and won the election. it was a unique circumstance here, because we have the far left criticizing biting today. and then you have this interest in the democratic party. he looks like he's trying to appease both the far left and people like joe. >> he has been pushed to the far left, and i don't know if

larger impact on next week's iowa caucus than many of the usual political factors, like candidate visits or the debates or the advertising where we're seeing candidates plowing millions into iowa ads as iowans plow their streets and driveways. now, this could matter more than some realize because these primaries don't just launch in five days in iowa. as you see with christie dropping tonight, these primaries in this primary season could end very quickly if former president trump wins the first few stas with big margins. iowa, though, has often given underdogs a fighting chance. the state is small enough that candidates can do local campaigning and go house to house. while its lack of diversity has been a point of controversy, its voters have pushed back on front runners in polls today. they rebuffed romney and his lead in the polls for santorum in 2012. ditto with dealing trump a loss in 2016, as we've mentioned in our coverage recently.

ask president romney. [ laughter ] [ applause ] i don't know. i mean, you're actually much better at reading polls than i am. i feel like -- i -- >> no, you are. you do a better job. you're more supple with them on everything. i just look at them and go, bah! i mean, i feel like polls in my adult lifetime are garbage. except occasionally they're right. >> except when they're not. >> so, yes, you can spend all your time worrying about the polls or you can work as hard as possible for the candidate who you want to win. and you know, sometimes there's having cross-tabs information about, like, you know, a specific group of meme who used to think about your chosen candidate, now thinks this about that person. okay, that might be helpful in terms of the way you want to go work for your candidate. but the point of them especially
