Welcome to brookings. My name is ron haskins, im the codirector along with Richard Reeves of the center on children and family serving brookings. Today we are releasing the 29th volume of the future of children. When i read that and we added these up, i almost died of exhaustion. It takes a lot to put these volumes up weve been doing this 10 or 11 years. This is the 27th policy brief. We have produced a lot of work. In this volume in policy brief we addressed vital issues of how to achieve broadscale impacts with social programs. We focused for several years on evidencebased policy, on developing programs that high quality evaluations show are capable of producing impacts on important child and family outcomes. The goal we are promoting today is to ensure highquality programs could have a broad range of impacts. We are trying to help as Many Community as possible to build up ....

committed. there are a whole host of influences on public policy and i spent 20 years in congress working on such things. i think one of the most important, if not the most important influence on policy matters is evidence. evidence for or against a proposition. a lot of people are skeptical of that these days. that skepticism isn t unwarranted, but i would caution against being too much of a synic. people see the partisan fights and think that nothing can move, knowing can do gone. ideology is not a bad thing, it s not a dirty world, it s a way to order the world in a cohesive cohesive floss philosophy. you work on important policy issues that affect a huge number of people, even in ideological polarizing times, so many good things that can make a huge difference in people s lives actually can get done. and i think that this is very, very important. there are massive areas of policy that were changed because there was almost overwhelming evidence around a policy change ....
