The hospitals on Staten Island spent the day recognizing their nurses’ commitment and dedication to their jobs and patients.
Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) set up a lunch to thank the nurses for their continued hard work.
“It recognizes that we know that the nurses are important to us and the community and we just want to take that special time to say thank you,” said Rosemarie Stazzone, chief nurse officer and chief operating officer at RUMC.

It is May 6, and – well over a year into a global pandemic that has impacted every member of the Staten Island community – it is time to pause for National Nurses Day 2021, part of this year’s nurse appreciation week.
It is difficult to send our thoughts back to last spring, when New York City was the epicenter of an emerging global pandemic, PPE was in short supply, the hospital beds were full, and morgues were working overtime to manage those who did not survive.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Richmond University Medical Center is taking a huge step in bettering health care services for Staten Island, particularly the entire North Shore, through extensive upgrades to its physical plant that includes the addition of a new, state-of-the art Emergency Department at a cost of more than $95 million.
The new addition is located adjacent to where the current ED sits and when completed, will contain private treatment rooms, trauma bays, comprehensive specialty areas for pediatrics and urgent care — a total of 47 treatment positions and all types of special sections designed by clinicians as well as management, to include optimum patient flow and design.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With the significant uptick in Covid-19 cases — and the hospitalizations that often follow — medical professionals are thrilled to shout good news about patients who have achieved positive outcomes.

COVID NYC Update: Richmond University Medical Center discharges patient who battled COVID for 8 weeks

A family's holiday party in Milmont Park, Delaware County, turned out to be its own superspreader event.
"We are ecstatic," Giliotti's wife Lorraine Giliotti said. "He went from the worst, to eventually coming off a ventilator, to needing a tracheotomy so he can breathe, to finally coming home. It's a miracle thanks to everyone on the staff at RUMC."
Slowly, Giliotti made his recovery and gathered enough strength to breathe on his own.
"Miracles are happening every day in the midst of this pandemic," chief operating officer and chief nurse officer, Rosemarie Stazzone said. "Gene's determination to return to his family, his will to live, made today possible. His discharge today provided an emotional boost for our entire hospital and a fantastic way for his family to start the new year."
