Thomas thanked the judge before being released on bail. He left the court, flanked by supporters, and did not comment to journalists waiting outside. The case is coming back to court in August when it is expected the Crown will indicate whether it will pursue a retrial. Now aged 83, Thomas faced a two-week trial at the Manukau District Court, accused of four historical charges of indecent assault and one of rape. He was twice wrongfully convicted for the 1970 murders of Jeannette and Harvey Crewe. After spending nine years in prison and following a Royal Commission of Inquiry, he was awarded almost $1 million in compensation.
