Researchers Find More Servers Tied to Russian-Linked Attacks

Researchers at the security firm RiskIQ have uncovered about 35 active command-and-control servers connected with an ongoing malware campaign that has been linked to a Russian-speaking attack group known as APT29 or Cozy Bear.
These servers, which are located in the U.S., Austria, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, Japan and nearly a dozen other countries, are used to host custom malware called WellMess and WellMail, RiskIQ says in a report released Friday. These malware strains have previously been deployed to target research organizations developing COVID-19 vaccines, the researchers note. ....

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are warning of continued cyberthreats stemming from Russia s Foreign Intelligence Service, or SVR, which the Biden administration accused of carrying out the SolarWinds supply chain attack.
In a joint alert issued Monday, the agencies warn that despite economic and other sanctions against Russia announced by the White House on April 15, attackers associated with the SVR likely will continue to target government networks, think tanks and policy analysis organizations - as well as private technology firms - using a variety of techniques and tools. ....

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI warn that unidentified nation-state actors are scanning for three vulnerabilities in Fortinet s operating system, FortiOS, to likely target government and private sector companies for cyberespionage.
In a joint alert released on Friday, the agencies note nation-state actors are scanning for FortiOS vulnerabilities tracked as CVE-2018-13379, CVE-2020-12812, CVE-2019-5591 for initial attacks.
The alert does not disclose details of the threat actors, but says the agencies have detected a surge in scanning activities for the vulnerabilities since March. The agencies say the attackers could use the vulnerabilities to gain access to the networks of government or private entities. ....
