A woman living in Arkansas in the mid-1980s describes how she found herself thrust into the heart of the rising AIDS pandemic.
Pippa Hudson features a memoire called “All the Young Men”. It’s the story of how a young woman living in Little Rock, Arkansas in the mid-1980s found herself thrust into the heart of the rising AIDS pandemic.
Ruth Coker Burks had no medical training and no personal connection to the local gay community, says Pippa.
It was a matter of pure chance that saw her stumble upon the fact that dozens of young men in her town were dying of this strange new illness – and many of them, dying all alone, rejected by their families and shunned by even medical staff.

"The focus of my artistic life," says George Saunders in his latest book, "has been trying to learn to write emotionally moving stories that a reader feels compelled to finish." A few years ago, I
had the privilege of attending an Auckland Writers Festival masterclass by this distinguished writer. It was an incredible 90 minutes. Saunders, who has taught creative writing at Syracuse University for more than 20 years, was generous with his insights, conveying wisdoms about the writing process and writer's life in an accessible, inspiring way. You can imagine my excitement when my daughter gifted me A Swim in the Pond in the Rain, a distillation of his Syracuse course, in which seven short stories by great Russian writers are springboards for examining the craft and reflecting on the significance of storytelling. I have just begun this read and am savouring every page.

We finally know the plots of missing It's A Sin episodes

With all of us feeling that the series was far too short of course we've all been wondering what the plots of those missing three episodes were.
Recently the show's creator, Russell T Davies, revealed what he had planned for those last three episodes to show where the characters of It's A Sin ended up in the future decades.
Davies explained  during an interview with AIDS activist, Ruth Coker Burks, that the show was meant to have a final episode that would follow Jill, now 55, in her search for the Tozer family’s secrets.
Davies went on to say that the final episode also would brought back an older Roscoe.

It's a Sin's Russell T Davies reveals twists from missing episode

It's a Sin creator Russell T Davies has opened up about his original ideas for a planned sixth episode of the Channel 4 drama.
The writer, whose AIDS-focused series has drawn huge acclaim since it premiered last month, originally envisioned the show as eight episodes long, though in the end condensed it into five – something he had to fight for after being offered four.
Speaking with legendary AIDS activist Ruth Coker Burks as part of Damian Barr's Literary Salon, Davis has now opened up about the further plot ideas he had planned, including another character and a time jump that would have followed an older Jill Baxter (Lydia West).

The Aids angel: how Ruth Coker Burks comforted dying gay men

Wed 3 Feb 2021 05.00 EST
Ruth Coker Burks has never been an obedient person. When she was visiting a friend in hospital and noticed a nearby door covered in red tarpaulin, the word “biohazard” stamped across it, she lingered. She watched the nurses draw straws, or toothpicks, to decide who would enter the room; then she watched them all walk away. In that moment, she knew: “I was going in there.”
The man in the room was so thin and white that he could barely be seen against the bedsheets. “I asked him if I could help,” Coker Burks says. “He wanted his mother. I thought: ‘Oh, OK, well that’s great. I can do that. Then I’ve done my good deed.’”

Ruth Coker Burks never set out to look after Aids patients in mid-80s Arkansas. She had been visiting a friend in hospital in Little Rock in 1986, and happened across a group of nurses drawing straws over who should go into a room labelled “Biohazard”. None of them wanted to go near patients with “that gay disease”.
