The Sherbrooke Phoenix were active participants in lead up to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) trade deadline, but they made their biggest splash with just hours to spare in the transfer window.
The Phoenix swapped two veterans, captain Samuel Poulin and hulking defenseman Xavier Bernard, to the league-leading Val-d’Or Foreurs for a slew of future draft picks. They also traded for a former QMJHL first overall pick, Joshua Roy, from the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Sea Dogs Busy Ahead Of QMJHL Trade Deadline

The Saint John Sea Dogs had a busy few weeks ahead of the QMJHL’s January 25 trade deadline.
The front office pulled off a number of trades this month, saying goodbye to 2019 first overall pick Joshua Roy while adding two NHL prospects.
Team president and general manager Trevor Georgie said it’s been a tough season to evaluate the roster, with a few players still missing due to international travel regulations.
“We knew we needed a bit more experience and a bit more punch to the lineup and consistency,” said Georgie. “It’s still a pretty young group, and we’ve been playing short a 20-year-old waiting for Vladislav Kotkov to show up.”

Another NHL Prospect Joins Sea Dogs

Another NHL prospect is joining the Saint John Sea Dogs lineup after a trade earlier this week.
The Sea Dogs have acquired overage goaltender Zachary Emond in a trade with Rouyn-Noranda.
In return, the Huskies received a fourth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2022.
Emond was selected in the sixth round of the 2018 NHL Draft by San Jose.
The Quebec native signed a standard entry-level contract with the team in May 2019.
Trevor Georgie, president and general manager of the Sea Dogs, said Emond is very experienced and will enhance the leadership in their dressing room.

When the QMJHL season resumes, the Saint John Sea Dogs will need to dig themselves out of a hole in the standings.
The team struggled out of the gate, losing seven of its first 10 games. In November, the team appeared to turn a corner, winning three of its last four games.
But an early-December announcement from the league meant the team would be shut down into the new year as the COVID-19 pandemic picked up steam across the country.

A capsule look at the 10 countries competing in the 2021 world junior men's hockey championship Dec. 25 to Jan. 5 in Edmonton (ranked in order of 2020 finish).

Half a dozen players return from the team that won gold in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in dramatic fashion. Trailing by two in the third period, Canada scored three to beat Russia. Tournament MVP Alexis Lafreniere was eligible to play again for Canada, but the New York Rangers didn't release the No. 1 pick in this year's NHL draft. Devon Levi was slated to start in goal for Canada's lone pre-tournament game against Russia on Wednesday, but the three goalies haven't got much time to separate themselves prior to the tournament.
