loophole. the west texas shooter had originally been denied access to firearms. >> yeah. >> because of the normal rules. then used the loophole, the private sale loophole. we have a bill in the senate right now that was passed by the house well over 100 days ago that would close that loophole. the country's overwhelmingly in support of it. mitch mcconnell should not be contracting the senate's decisions out to the white house. we're a separate branch of government. let's take this up. let's vote. if mcconnell wants to vote no, that's his choice. don't bar the senate from acting. >> senator, jim and i had two republican members of the house on yesterday, kensinger and tom reed. i want you to listen to what they both said on areas where they see compromise, where they might be willing to give on background checks and red flag laws. here they were. >> i've seen some universal background check bills that are bad. i think we can make some good
how do you prevent it from falling into the hands of a wayward student or it being used in an improper way? i don't think any of those have been answered. i don't think it's going anywhere on capitol hill because for the biggest -- for the main reason being democrats are simply not going to support it. this is an aoe 1/2 ma to their core supporters who want to go into the opposite direction, which is more limits on guns, background checks, consensus support including closing the private sale loophole. a republican tried to do that in 2013. the bigger question, is anything going to get through? i'm accident tal even if it's a 90/10 issue or 80/20 issue. yes, people talk about nra donations. but the bigger issue is gun rights voters are, in many cases, single issue voters who have proven time and again they will punish politicians who take any step in the direction of new
looking to pass background check laws. we know they work. we see them in states, in the 18 states that have passed background check laws, we see police killings cut in half. we see domestic homicides cut in half, suicides cut almost in half. we know these laws work, and we already have them for sales for federally licensed dealers. we need background checks to close the private sale loophole. we need background checks at every gun sale in the country. we know it will save lives but congress does nothing. >> alison parker's father is on capitol hill. how is he going to help the conversation? >> i can't imagine the courage and bravery it takes to say he will do whatever it takes to stop gun violence in this country in the wake of his own daughter's murder on live television. i can't imagine that, but i'm grateful for hiss voice in this discussion. we need it. he has said he's going to commit
