Why Rush To Buy Vaccines In The Global South? Covid-19 Is Mainly A First World Virus

Why Rush To Buy Vaccines In The Global South? Covid-19 Is Mainly A First World Virus
Dr. Darini Rajasingham-Senanayake
In recent weeks, global media and news channels like Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN and India’s NDTV have been marketing vaccines to the world with images of Prime Ministers, Vice President elects, and a Crown Prince in the Middle East taking a jab live on television– seemingly to encourage Covid-19 vaccine skeptics.
Highly advertised vaccines are being produced and rolled out at ‘warped speed’ by powerful pharmaceutical and bio-technology companies headquartered in Euro-America although their efficacy for the new British and South African variants of the virus, or how long their immunity lasts is not clear. These vaccines have been authorized for ‘emergency use ‘in Europe and North America due to the spike in Covid-19 winter flu cases in the northern hemisphere.

Mushrooms Make Meals More Nutritious

Mushrooms Make Meals More Nutritious

Research findings show that adding mushrooms to the diet increases the intake of several micronutrients. Intake of shortfall nutrients like vitamin D also increases without increasing sodium, calories, or fat.
Dr. Victor L. Fulgoni III and Dr. Sanjiv Agarwal matched the addition of mushrooms in their study to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2016 dietary data.
Their diet looked at a mix of white, cremini, and portabella mushrooms at a 1:1:1 ratio. Two scenarios were considered - one with UV-light exposed mushrooms and one with oyster mushrooms for 9-18 years and 19 plus years of age based on an 84g or ½ cup equivalent serving.

India Coronavirus Dispatch: Covaxin not for people on blood thinners

17 per cent of Indians between ages 30 and 69 on blood thinners, cannot take Covaxin
At least 17 per cent of Indians between the ages of 30 and 69 years cannot be administered Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, as the inoculant is not meant for people who use blood thinners, according to a report in ThePrint.
Some 17.4 per cent Indians are on aspirin, a commonly used blood thinner, according to the National Non-Communicable Disease Monitoring Survey 2017-18. Blood thinners are drugs that impede blood coagulation, both within blood vessels and in case of bleeding. Covaxin’s fact-sheet says that people who are on blood thinners or those who have bleeding disorders cannot take it. The fact-sheet for the Serum Institute of India's Covisheld asks potential recipients to inform their doctors in advance if they are on such medication, the report said.

Come on Bollywood… pull out a few cool 'vaxxie' looks. Airport looks are so 2020!
Despite these early roadblocks, citizens are filled with confidence and hope that the timely delivery of the shots is definitely going to halt the coronavirus -- and hopefully, any mutant/variant as well. (Representative Photo:AP)
I am all set for “the jab”. Hoping I will get it soonest. Admission: I am severely needle phobic, to the extent that I cannot watch someone else getting a prick even if it is on the screen. Despite that and several other reservations, I am consoling myself on many levels. I am all set to shoot my “vaxxie” -- for those asking, “wat dat”? -- a “vaxxie” is a selfie shot with the arm that is not going under the vaccinator’s needle. Right now, despite a slight tremor in my voice as I write these words, I am thanking my stars that I am not Norwegian. And that I am not yet 80. Chances are pretty high that I’ll survive the jab and live to tell the tale.

India Coronavirus Dispatch: Ministries gear up for Jan 16 vaccine roll-out

Ministries and state departments instructed to gear up ahead of vaccine rollout
As India inches closer to kicking off a nationwide Covid-19 vaccination drive on January, more than a dozen ministries and two dozen state-level departments are being mobilised for a smooth roll-out, according to a report in The Indian Express.
To ensure continuous refrigeration for the inoculations, the central power ministry has been instructed to work in tandem with state power distribution companies to have uninterrupted power supply at vaccine storage centres and vaccination points. The Railways will use "vaccine branding" on railway tickets and carry out vaccination sessions at its hospitals, dispensaries, and other places it runs. The labour ministry has been instructed to conduct vaccination sessions across Employees' State Insurance's (ESI) network of hospitals and staff. ESI is a social security and health insurance scheme for Indian workers that works as an autonomous body under the labour ministry. The defence ministry is expected to assist the supply of vaccines into hard-to-reach and danger-prone areas.
