There are things individuals can do to lower heath care costs, but they also are getting help from employers, the government and even some providers.

Since expanding Medicaid coverage, the number of Nebraskans without health coverage has plunged, hospitals are feeling less stress on their bottom lines and fewer people are filing for bankruptcy.

An estimated 132,000 Nebraskans are now eligible for plans through the federal marketplace under which their premiums would be entirely covered by subsidies.

“Medicaid expansion must include access to crucial health care services like dental, vision, and over-the-counter drug coverage for all enrollees without barriers,” said Sarah Maresh, an attorney for the group. To qualify for prime coverage, recipients must meet work or volunteer requirements or participate in educational or job-training programs. They also have to meet with a health care provider for a wellness assessment.
