Researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine report that they have found that microbes in the gut may contribute to certain symptoms associated with complex neurological disorders. Their study “Dissecting the contribution of host genetics and the microbiome in complex behaviors,” published in
Cell, also suggests that microbe-inspired therapies may one day help to treat them.
Mauro Costa-Mattioli, PhD, professor and Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair in neuroscience and director of the Memory and Brain Research Center at Baylor, discovered with his team that different abnormal behaviors are interdependently regulated by the host’s genes and microbiome. Specifically, the team found that in mouse models for neurodevelopmental disorders, hyperactivity is controlled by the host’s genetics, whereas social behavior deficits are mediated by the ....

Probiotics could hold the answer to neurological issues, study suggests
A new study in mice with social behaviour deficits has suggested the gut plays a lead role in behaviour and brain function and microbiome modulating products may hold the key to treatment of social neurological disorders.
Dr. Mauro Costa-Mattioli, professor and Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair in neuroscience and director of the Memory and Brain Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, discovered with his team that different abnormal behaviours are interdependently regulated by the host s genes and microbiome.
The findings, published in the journal

Gut Microbes Could be a Way to Treat Some Neurological Disorders

Gut Microbes Could be a Way to Treat Some Neurological Disorders
Researchers and clinicians have often studied genes that affect the function and development of the brain to explain neurological disorders. While we know that gene expression and variations in genetic sequences are important to human health, we re gaining a better appreciation of the influence of the gut microbiome on our biology. All of the microbes in the gut also have their own genomes, which affect us in different ways, and the gut also has a special, direct connection to the brain known as the gut-brain axis.
Researchers have now used a mouse model of behavioral problems to show how gut microbes may one day be a way to treat some neurological disorders. The work has been reported in ....
