ALWAYS QUESTIONS ARISE ABOUT THE STATE OF THE CITY’S DRAINAGE SYSTEM AND GINA GET THE PERSON IN CHARGE SAYS THE SITUATION IS QUOTE ALARMING AND CONCERNING CHIEF INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER GREG. LAROSE IS LIVE BREAKING DOWN THE PROBLEMS AND WHAT’S GOING TO COST TO FIX ALL OF THEM, GREG. YEAH, TRAVERSE SEWAGE AND WATERBOARD LEADER. GASSAN. CORBIN DIDN’T HOLD BACK WORDS TODAY. HE SAYS THE STATE OF THE POWER SUPPLY FOR THE CITY’S DRAINAGE SYSTEM IS PRECARIOUS. WE ARE IN THE FRAGILE STATE GENERATORS MEN ONLY FOR EMERGENCY USE ARE NOW FULL-TIME WEAPONS IN THE CITY’S BATTLE WITH FLOODING EVERY TIME WE FACE A HEAVY RAIN THREAT IN NEW ORLEANS AND ONLY FOUR OUT OF FIVE ARE AVAILABLE THE SEWAGE AND WATERBOARD ALSO RELIES ON A CENTURY-OLD TURBINE TO POWER NOT ONLY ITS DRAINAGE SYSTEM. BUT ALSO IT’S DRINKING WATER AND WASTEWATER PLANTS. YES, WHERE WE ARE AND JUST KNOW NO SUGAR COATING IT AND NO WAY OF SKIRTING THAT. THE SEWAGE IN WATER BOARD IS IN TALKS WITH INTERG TO BUILD A SUBSTATION AT ITS CARROLLTON PLANT THAT WOULD EVENTUALLY REPLACE THE OUTDATED TURBINES NOW IN USE AND WE’LL HAVE TO BORROW 34 MILLION DOLLARS FROM ENTERGY TO PAY FOR THE SUBSTATION TWO SEWAGE AND WATERBOARD TURBINES ARE UNDER REPAIR FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE MORE MONTHS IN THE MEANTIME CARBON SAYS THE CITY HAS VERY MINIMAL PROTECTION FROM FLOODS. IT’S NOT A PANIC SITUATION, BUT IS IT CONCERNING AN ALARMING SITUATION TO BE TO BE JUST AS AS I CAN BE NOW MUCH OF THE MONEY FOR THAT POWER SYSTEM UPGRADE. WELL LIKELY COME FROM FEDERAL OR STATES SOURCES. IF IT DOESN’T IT COULD FALL TO CUSTOMERS TO COVER THAT COST THROUGH HIGHER BILLS NOW COMING UP AT SIX O’CLOCK. WE’LL HEAR FROM MAYOR LATOYA CANTRELL ABOUT STATE MONEY THAT’S ALREADY BEEN SET ASIDE FOR THE SEWAGE AND WATER BOARD FOR NOW. I’M GREG LAROS

WDSU Investigates: S&WB interim superintendent missed annual ethics training seven times since 2010

The Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans announced a major change in its leadership Wednesday, and there's controversy surrounding the new appointment.Ron Spooner was named interim general superintendent, which is the second-highest-ranking position in the utility. Spooner is the long-time chief engineer for the utility, and like other Sewerage & Water Board employees, he's supposed to take part in annual ethics training.WDSU Investigates reviewed state ethics administration records and found that Spooner did not complete the training for seven years since 2010. Records do show he earned a certificate for 2021 earlier this month before his promotion, but there were no findings for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2020.A Sewerage & Water Board spokesperson said Spooner was on military duty from July 2014 to May 2015 "and honorably served our nation in an active combat zone." Spooner was a reservist in the U.S. Navy for 22 years, according to an S&WB news release. There was no explanation from utility officials as to why Spooner didn't complete ethics training before or after his deployment, or in the other years it was missed. Spooner takes over on an interim basis from Robert Turner, who the Sewerage & Water Board said will retire March 4. Turner was part of the emergency team that took over utility operations after the summer 2o17 floods when Executive Director Cedric Grant and other key leaders resigned amid criticism. Turner moved into the general superintendent role in 2019, putting him in charge of the city's drainage, sewer and drinking water systems.

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The next three months will be difficult ones for the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board as it struggles to replace three turbines needed to power drainage pumps.
The board says it’s making progress.
For the past several years, the city’s drainage system has been plagued by broken turbines needed to run pumps, and three are still down.
“Obviously we are in a fragile bleak state,” said S&WB director Ghassan Korban.

OUT AND THE SUN WILL SHINE, COMING UP. GINA: THE SEWERAGE AND WATER BOARD ALERTED NEIGHBORS AROUND THE CARROLLTON PLANT THAT IT WILL NEED TO USE ITS NOISY GENERATORS TO PROVIDE POWER TO ITS DRAINAGE PUMPS THIS WEEKEND. THE UTILITY COMPANY TWEETED THIS MORNING THAT THE GENERATORS ARE A CRITICAL PART OF THE CITY’S DRAINAGE SYSTEM. YOU’LL RECALL FIVE NEW PORTABLE GENERATORS WERE OBTAINED AFTER FLOODS IN 2017 CAUSED THE WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. THE GENERATORS WERE INTENDED TO BE BACKUPS TO THE MAIN POWER SOURCE, BUT IT HAS BECOME THE GO TO OPTION AS THE AGING TURBINES HAVE FAILED. ONLY TWO OF THE TURBINES ARE AVAILABLE, AND GENERATORS ARE NEEDED FOR PUMPS THAT DON’T GET POWER DIRECTLY FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES. IN THIS CASE, ENTERGY. 97 OF THE 99 DRAINAGE PUMPS ARE OPERATIO
