Our critics pick what’s new to streaming and VOD for the weekend of December 18. And list everything new to VOD and streaming platforms.
Another Round
(Thomas Vinterberg)
Director and co-writer Thomas Vinterberg’s latest reunites him with Mads Mikkelsen for a film slightly looser but no less unforgiving than their last collaboration, 2012’s
Another Round casts Mikkelsen, Lars Ranthe, Magnus Millang, and Vinterberg mainstay Thomas Bo Larsen as high-school teachers who embark on a radical experiment: would their careers and relationships be better if they maintained a minimum blood-alcohol level of 0.05? The answer may not surprise anyone, but the path to it is both very funny and very grim, with the quartet adapting to their state of constant inebriation with varying levels of success. Vinterberg is an old hand at spinning awkward human moments into explosive comedy or soul-freezing dread, as the situation depends, and this story gives him the opportunity to do a little of both. Similarly Mikkelsen finds a way to play both the liberation and misery of a never-ending drunk, turning down his quicksilver charisma to blend into the ensemble—until it all comes pouring out of him in a brilliant, and brilliantly ambiguous, final dance number. You’ll see.

HUNTER HUNTER Review - A Backwoods Battle For Survival Is One Of The Best Horror Films Of The Year

Upending expectations at every turn, Shawn Linden’s survivalist horror tale
Hunter Hunter never feels unbalanced even though, as a viewer, you may never feel like you’re on even footing. Although everything that transpires occurs over only a few days, the story unfolding actually feels like a ghastly campfire story that’s been passed down from generation to generation. But
Hunter Hunter abandons the formula of classic folklore in favor of a much more gruesome fable about the evils of man, the loss of tradition, and the uncontrollable wrath of a desperate family. In doing so, one of the best horror films of the year comes barreling out of the woods, intent on bewildering its audience seemingly unconcerned with leaving a lot of questions unanswered.

Hunter Hunter review: Holy hell, that ending

Hunter Hunter’s narrative pivot is key to its success, but Linden still struggles to bridge the muted world-building and tense familial drama of its early scenes with the gut-churning nightmares that precede its bloody climax. Just as Joseph stumbles upon the dark secrets tucked within his land, the film hitches us to a pair of local authorities who broaden the world without bringing much else. As they grapple with vacationing yuppies and, eventually, a paranoid Anne, the narrative stalls, reminding us that there are much, much more interesting things happening offscreen. What the film doesn’t show, however, soon proves to be as intentional as what it does.

'Hunter Hunter': Film Review | Hollywood Reporter

12/18/2020
A family of fur hunters runs into trouble in the wilderness in Shawn Linden's thriller featuring Camille Sullivan, Devon Sawa and Nick Stahl.
Since my parents inexplicably failed to instill in me a love for killing at an early age, I've never gone hunting. But I can imagine that it takes a lot of patience and exactitude before achieving the satisfaction of the final result.
Shawn Linden's new thriller
Hunter Hunter is a lot like that.
The film's title is repetitive by design, providing a not-so-subtle hint that there will be more than one stalker of living creatures on display. The first of these in the 1990s-set story is Joseph (Devon Sawa, of

'Hunter Hunter' review: Survivalist thriller takes a dark turn

In writer-director Shawn Linden’s survivalist thriller “Hunter Hunter,” Camille Sullivan plays Anne Mersault, who reluctantly lives deep in the woods with her fur trapper husband, Joseph (Devon Sawa), and their resourceful daughter, Renée (Summer H. Howell). The family barely ekes out a living, so when a wolf stalks their land and starts stealing from their traps, the threat taxes an already fraying marriage.
That’s the setup for this film — and it’s plenty dramatic. But Linden uses that premise as the jumping-off point for a surprising and often repulsively gory story, which kicks into high gear when Joseph tracks the wolf and discovers several dismembered bodies, clearly tortured and murdered by a human.
