In the tropical waters off the coast of Indonesia, a free-swimming coral larva attaches itself to an underwater rock and starts to grow. The larva grows into a coral polyp, then a colony that matures and releases larvae that colonize other rocks. In time, it helps to create one of nature’s most spectacular ecosystems: a coral reef. Orange, blue, and sparkling-silver fish dart around a seascape of vibrant greens, yellows, pinks, reds, purples, and countless combinations of the full rainbow of color. There are few places on our planet as otherworldly and intensely colorful as a healthy coral reef.

The effort to solve this requires global cooperation on a massive scale and through this campaign, SHEBA hopes to play the role of catalyst, helping to ensure the future has coral reefs and fish – as more coral today, will ensure more fish tomorrow. Mars Petcare has made progress towards a longstanding goal to sustainably source 100% of the fish used in some of our pet food recipes. Sustainable fishing depends on the seas’ resources and this can only be achieved by supporting these incredible natural assets. As the oceans’ most diverse ecosystem, coral reefs are at the heart of our efforts and why Hope Reef and our commitment to coral restoration is so important.

'World's largest' coral reef restoration project backed by Mars Petcare
Mars Petcare brand Sheba has partnered with The Nature Conservancy to deliver what it claims is the world's largest coral restoration programme, covering more than 185,000 square metres.

The partner organisations have today (5 May) unveiled the first images and videos of ‘Sheba Hope Reef’, the starting location for the global initiative. Work to restore the reef, off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia, began two years ago and, in that time, coral cover has increased from, 5% to 55%.
It is hoped that the success of this project can be replicated at a string of other locations, covering some 185,000 square metres by the end of 2029. The Nature Conservancy is using a technology called ‘Reef Star’ at Sheba Hope Reef. These are star-shaped, steel structures that join together underwater, creating a ‘web’ that encourages coral fragments to regrow. This approach will be used at other locations, which are to be announced.
