Son of Libyan cartoonist 'AlSatoor' on life with his revolutionary father

SHARE
When Sherif Dhaimish was a young boy growing up in Burnley, north-west England, he had little clue that his father was an internationally celebrated Libyan political satirist who was also wanted by the Qaddafi regime.
“I was aware that my dad was a cartoonist and that he was Libyan but I didn’t know what that really meant,” Sherif tells
The National of Hasan “AlSatoor” Dhaimish, the prolific cartoonist who died in the UK in 2016.
Controversial, funny, brutally honest and often offensive, AlSatoor began publishing his cartoons in 1980 and gave a unique view of Libyan politics over the decades.

Playwrights Realm Announces Winners of International Theatermakers Award

Playwrights Realm Announces Winners of International Theatermakers Award
Recipients include lighting designer Alexandra Vásquez Dheming, director Danilo Gambini, lighting designer Omar Madkour and more.by BWW News Desk
Applying for an O-1 visa can cost thousands of dollars-and be a draining and uncertain experience. In a moment where most theatermakers are struggling to maintain their livelihoods, immigrant artists are having to work under the added pressures of these costly applications, international travel restrictions, and the maintenance of status requirements to prove "extraordinary ability"-even as the projects they would cite as proof have largely been canceled. Recognizing the critical contribution of theatermakers from around the world to American theater and the barriers they face to work in our country, The Playwrights Realm (Founding Artistic Director Katherine Kovner and Producing Director Roberta Pereira) first launched the International Theatermakers Award program, in partnership with law firm Dyer Harris LLP, last Fall. Today, The Playwrights Realm and Dyer Harris LLP-whose focus is immigration for creative artists and professionals- announce the recipients of the award: lighting designer Alexandra Vásquez Dheming, director Danilo Gambini, lighting designer Omar Madkour, playwright Jeton Neziraj, and lighting designer Cha See, selected by a panel including Saheem Ali, Asiimwe Deborah Kawe, Jose Solís, and Realm Producing Director Roberta Pereira.

Shifting identity: Omar Al Qattan on making movies and promoting Arab culture

SHARE
The first time that Omar Al Qattan filmed in the Palestinian territories, he was a 22-year-old on set with his mentor, the director Michel Khleifi.
Happy weeks were spent scouting locations in the West Bank region in search of the perfect settings for the scenes depicted in the script in only his second visit to the birthplace of his parents. He soaked up the breathtaking scenery and filmed in a restored Ottoman fortress village surrounded by olive groves.
The result was 1987's
Wedding in Galilee, the first studio feature film shot in Palestine, depicting life under curfew following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. It would go on to win a clutch of awards, including the prestigious International Critics Prize at Cannes, and propel Khleifi on the path to directorial eminence.
