Many Sikh families with agricultural backgrounds emigrated from India to the Midwest because of its auto and trucking industries, said Amrith Kaur, the coalition's legal director.
Members of the Sikh community gather in mourning in Indianapolis on Saturday
Indianapolis:
Amarjeet Kaur Johal was once a regular at Sikh Satsang of Indianapolis, volunteering to cook and clean up after communal meals.
On Saturday, Johal's family, friends and co-workers gathered at the temple without her.
Johal, a grandmother of five, was one of the eight workers killed when a gunman opened fire at a FedEx warehouse Thursday night. Four of the victims were Sikh, a loss that cuts deep in this tightknit community, connected by faith and a common heritage tied to Punjab.

About 150 people stood outside Beech Grove’s City Hall building at 7 p.m. to attend a prayer vigil organized by the city of Beech Grove and the Mayor’s Faith-Based Roundtable.
At the end of a series of speeches and prayers, Pastor Dan Bailey invited people to take a small plastic light from the cardboard box at the top of City Hall steps as a symbol of hope.
“Shine the light, chase away the darkness, go into our community and set this city on fire with a light from above that the darkness must flee,” he said.
Earlier in the day, another crowd of about 200 people gathered at Monument Circle for a different vigil. Those attending the downtown vigil were asked to bring flowers, pictures and candles.

The FedEx package sorting facility near the Indianapolis airport is a sprawling, nondescript warehouse with multiple shifts of workers - a popular workplace for recent high school graduates starting their adult lives, but also a gathering place for older Indian immigrants searching for community in addition to a paycheck.
Eight of those who worked at the facility were killed Thursday night by a 19-year-old former fellow co-worker who opened fire in the parking lot and then continued his rampage inside, shattering lives and communities as he went. The tragedy was the third mass shooting in the city this year, and the sixth public mass shooting in the United States in five weeks.

FedEx gunman legally bought rifles despite red flag laws – US police

The former employee who shot dead eight people at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis legally bought the two rifles used in the attack despite red flag laws designed to prevent such purchases, police said.
A trace of the two guns found by investigators at the scene revealed that suspect Brandon Hole, 19, of Indianapolis, legally bought the rifles last July and September, officials with the Indianapolis police said.
The police did not say where Hole bought the weapons, citing the ongoing investigation, but said he was seen using both rifles during the assault.
Authorities said Hole shot dead eight people, four of them from the city’s Sikh community, at the FedEx facility late on Thursday before killing himself.
