Actor Gloria Henry, who advanced from B movies in the 1940s to an iconicTV mom on the CBS sitcom “Dennis the Menace,” died Saturday, one day after her 98th birthday.
Henry’s death was revealed Sunday in an Instagram post from her daughter, Erin Ellwood an interior designer and longtime production designer. “She was such an incredible woman in so many ways,” Ellwood wrote.
Henry played Alice Mitchell, the endlessly patient, shirtwaist dress-wearing mother of the mischievous title character created as a newspaper cartoon by Hank Ketcham. The TV series adaptation ran from 1959 to 1963 with Jay North in the title role. Henry’s co-star Herbert Anderson also became an iconic TV dad with his horn rim glasses, sharp-angled suits and V-neck sweaters.

Patricia Engel's novels don't begin so much as they crack open. Consider the first line of the Miami writer's 2010 debut, "Vida": "It was the year my uncle got arrested for killing his wife, and our family was the subject of all the town gossip." The start of 2016's "The Veins of the Ocean" presents a man, maddened by his wife's infidelity, who takes their toddler son to a bridge, lifts the boy "as high in the sky as he'd go" and throws him into Biscayne Bay. The child survives. The father is dead by the third page.

"I know a lot of you white people have never seen an Indian do stand-up comedy before," joked Charlie Hill on "The Richard Pryor Show" in 1977. "Like, for so long you probably thought that Indians never had a sense of humor. We never thought you were too funny either."
Hill's TV debut, making him the first indigenous comedian in prime time, is one of the milestones that Kliph Nesteroff chronicles in "We Had a Little Real Estate Problem," an illuminating and stereotype-busting history of Native Americans and comedy.

Loews Hotels said Saturday that it would not host a fundraiser with Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, the latest indication that many companies are distancing themselves from Republicans who voted to overturn the election results.
Fighting for Missouri, a political action committee affiliated with Hawley, had planned to host a “fun-filled, family-friendly Orlando weekend event” with the senator at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando, Florida, from Feb. 12 to Feb. 15, according to an invitation for the event. Tickets were being sold for $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the size of the group.

Former General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt is publishing a memoir of his 16 years leading General Electric, with the onetime New Canaan resident having moved the conglomerate’s headquarters in 2016 to Boston from Fairfield, while selling off large chunks of Norwalk-based GE Capital.
In “HOT SEAT: What I learned leading a Great American Company” co-authored by Immelt and Amy Wallace, publisher Simon & Schuster promises “a rigorous and candid self-interrogation” of Immelt’s tenure as Jack Welch’s replacement.

Through the eyes of a character with uncommon access and compassion, Sadeqa Johnson's novel "The Yellow Wife" evokes a vision of one woman's tenacious survival of antebellum cruelty and objectification.
The daughter of an enslaved healer and seamstress and her White master, Pheby Delores Brown grows up in a kind of in-between state. "Problem with being high yella," an enslaved woman tells Pheby after her father's wife slaps her, "that handprint gonna be on your face all day long." Though she labors on the plantation, her father secretly encourages her education and assures her she'll be freed on her 18th birthday.
