TAIEX recovers after shock over shooting of Abe

The TAIEX yesterday bounced back to close 0.89 percent higher at 14,464.53 points, after news that former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe had been shot at a political campaign event sent the market tumbling in intraday trading, Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) data showed.
The TAIEX joined other Asian stocks falling in afternoon trading after Abe’s assassination erased gains made earlier yesterday, the exchanges’ data showed.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 closed up 0.1 percent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index closed up 0.38 percent, South Korea’s KOSPI rose 0.7 percent and Singapore’s Straits Times Index edged up 0.06 percent, while the Shanghai

The TAIEX slid again yesterday, declining more than 20 percent from a January high and entering a bear market.
The weighted index closed 3.3 percent lower in Taipei. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), which accounts for more than one-quarter of the index’s weighting, declined 4.73 percent to close at NT$4,553.5 amid broad weakness in the chip sector following Micron Technology Inc’s disappointing forecasts.

Wiwynn Corp (緯穎科技), a cloud computing equipment supplier, on Friday reported that first-quarter net profit and earnings per share were the highest for the January-to-March period in the company’s history.
Net profit was NT$1.7 billion (US$60.9 million), down 37.82 percent quarter-on-quarter, but up 16.17 percent year-on-year, said the company, a subsidiary of contract electronics maker Wistron Corp (緯創).
Earnings per share reached NT$9.72, lower than the NT$15.63 in the fourth quarter of last year, but higher than the NT$8.37 in the first quarter of last year, the company said in a statement.

MediaTek posts 78% revenue hike

Handset chip designer MediaTek Inc (聯發科) on Tuesday posted consolidated revenue of NT$35.33 billion (US$1.24 billion) for last month, its second-highest monthly revenue on record.
Thanks to growth in mobile computing, the Internet of Things and smart applications, revenue rose 78.29 percent from a year earlier and 8.96 percent from December last year.
The company last month forecast that its first-quarter revenue would reach NT$96.4 billion to NT$104.1 billion, flat or up 8 percent from last quarter.
