Inside Center City’s Curiously Named New Cocktail Lounge
The sleek spot opens on Chestnut Street this week

Center City gets a swank new cocktail lounge when Leda and the Swan opens Friday, January 31, at 1224 Chestnut Street with drinks named for mythological figures, flickering candles, and a velvet-curtained entrance. Owners Derek Gibbons and Tim Lu say it’s not a club, but there is live music and late-night DJs.
The name refers to a story in Greek mythology where the god Zeus turns into a swan and definitely has sex with, probably rapes, Spartan queen Leda, who then maybe hatches some kids. She appears often in ancient and Italian Renaissance-era art. “Leda and the Swan is inspired by a Greek myth which embodies values of art, myth, and love. We want people to be intrigued by the name and the concept, and to be culturally curious,” Gibbons says via press release, seeming to lean toward the Zeus

Hot on the heels of the opening of his new bar in Fairmount (the Fairview), Fergie Carey is ready to unveil
The Goat in Rittenhouse. Opened alongside his long-time partner Jim McNamara, the Goat is located at 1907 Samson Street where Oh! Shea’s used to be, named after the Billy Goat statue in Rittenhouse Square.

Wine Dive brings Vegas glam to South Street
Married couple introduces 'dive bar' on South Street for wine enthusiasts with prices suited for all budgets
Perhaps the only thing missing is a neon sign reading “Vino Las Vegas.”
When Chris Fetfatzes and Heather Annechiarico dreamed up their newly-opened 1970s, Vegas-inspired Wine Dive on South Street, they thought of just about everything, and this place has it all.
Wildly eclectic wall decor, a retro lounge and a jukebox are just some of the charm the married couple was aiming to showcase when they opened the Wine Dive right next door to the Cambridge restaurant, which is another one of the four establishments they now own in Philadelphia.

3124 Richmond St Rear, Philadelphia, PA 19134
The aptly-named and charming Tiny’s Bottle Shop is tucked away behind Port Richmond’s bar/restaurant Lunar Inn. Despite its cozy intimacy, Tiny’s offers quite a selection of organic and biodynamic wine. Interesting and lesser-known bottles from the East Coast and local producers like Mural City Cellars stand alongside international specialties. Wines range from everyday drinkers priced under $20 to more ritzy sparklers. The staff is friendly and upbeat, and handwritten tasting notes that hang around bottles’ necks provide a personal touch. A shop favorite is “Tiny’s Chill Wine 3-Packs,” which include a bottle of red, white, and sparkling for between $60 and $80. Tiny’s also offers beer and cider.

Alex Vasiliadis says he’s going for a romantic vibe at Bodega Bar and Kitchen, the new Latin-themed bar and restaurant he just debuted with his brother, Stavros, and business partner George Karagiannis. The cozy, dimly lit Bodega, at 1223 Walnut Street in Midtown Village/the Gayborhood, is open daily with tequila-based cocktails and an inventive, hard-to-categorize food menu.
Big windows open Bodega up to Walnut Street (for now; curtains will be added) but stepping inside feels a bit like you’re being transported out of Philly, thanks to the bar’s red lighting, patterned tiles, copper panels, wrought iron light fixtures casting intricate shadows, and DJ playing noticeable but not overly loud music. The decor is meant to evoke Cuba, the owners say, with influence from other Latin American countries. They are not from one of those countries.

Fergie’s Pub Owner Heads to Fairmount for a Bright, Vegan-Friendly Bar

Longtime Philly bar owner Fergus Carey of Fergie’s Pub makes moves in Fairmount this week with the Fairview, a brightened-up corner spot taking over the space at 601 N. 21st Street that was neighborhood staple Belgian Cafe. It officially opens Thursday, January 16.
The ownership is a bit convoluted: Carey owned Belgian Cafe and renowned Belgian beer bar Monk’s Cafe with Tom Peters. They recently sold each other their shares in the businesses, so Carey is no longer a part of Monk’s and Peters was no longer involved in Belgian Cafe.

On Thursday, Philly bar owner
Fergie Carey (Grace Tavern and Fergie’s Pub) will open
the Fairview
, a neighborhood gastropub with an emphasis on plant-based food. The Fairview is located in the space that used to house the Belgian Cafe, which Carey closed last summer.
The Fairview’s chef, Beth Fox (previously of St. Benjamin’s Brewing Company), has a particular interest in vegan and vegetarian food, so you’ll find classics like the Belgian Cafe’s vegan wings, but also items like vegan green chili cheeseburger empanadas and a smoked carrot dip (alongside a meat-eater options like a grilled pork chop and steak frites). Like all of Fergie’s joints, the beer list will be expansive. Fox is also a certified sommelier, and helped design the wine menu to feature options that would pair well with her food.

This Friday, January 10th,
Wine Dive will open on South Street serving wine, cocktails, beer, cider and food in a casual, dive-y environment. The bar comes to us from Chris Fetfatzes & Heather Annechiarico, who also own the Cambridge next door.
The drink menu includes a wide variety of wines by the glass, from $5 to $15, classic and original cocktails, and a variety of pony beer and shot combinations, including the Italian Stallion which, for $10, gets you a Miller Lite and a pour of amaro. On Wednesday nights, $10 will buy you a beer, shot and a burger, and that’s just the beginning of their many, many specials. Manhattan Mondays will bring $10 barrel-aged Manhattan. On Saturdays, a.k.a “Naturdays”, natural wines will be available with special by the glass prices. Sparkling wine is the special on Saber Sundays, named for the special sword that is used to slice open a bottle of sparkling wine. It is unclear whether they’ll actually be using a saber, but we’re hoping yes.
