MADRID (Reuters) - Spain approved AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine for use in people aged 18 to 55 on Friday, becoming the latest country to limit the shot to younger people due to a lack of data on its use among the elderly.

Italy also recommends its preferential use for adults of 55 and under, while Germany, France, Austria and Norway will only administer the shot to people younger than 65.
Separately, Madrid confirmed on Friday the region’s first case of the Brazilian COVID-19 variant, while the national health ministry said it was not aware of any other cases of the highly contagious strain on Spanish territory.

Spain blames EU for dwindling COVID-19 vaccine supplies

Spain blames EU for dwindling COVID-19 vaccine supplies - El Mundo

MADRID, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Spain's health ministry is blaming the European Union for delays to COVID-19 vaccine deliveries that forced Madrid to halt new inoculations and threatened supplies across Spain, newspaper El Mundo quoted a leaked official document as saying.
With stocks dwindling and new infections near record levels, regional authorities in Madrid have stopped vaccinating new people and are using their remaining supplies to administer second shots to those who have already received a first jab.
Facing criticism from some regions, the central government pointed the finger at Brussels for the supply problems in a draft agenda for a summit of regional health chiefs due to be held later on Thursday.

Covid-19 in Spain: Spanish Health Ministry wants 'corrective' measures against vaccination irregularities | Society

The Spanish Health Ministry will ask regional governments to closely monitor the Covid-19 vaccine administration process, to avoid new cases of people getting immunized ahead of time thanks to their influence or contacts.
Spain is struggling to contain a surge in coronavirus cases that is stretching hospitals to the breaking point in several parts of the country. On Thursday afternoon, Portugal said it will close its border with Spain on Friday for at least two weeks in a bid to curb its own soaring caseload.
A draft ministry document first reported by the daily
El Mundo and which EL PAÍS has seen asks regional authorities for “preventive and corrective measures” to guarantee that shots are administered according to the government’s list of priority groups. What these measures should be is not specified.

MADRID, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Spain made clear on Thursday it supported the European Union's handling of a shortfall in COVID-19 vaccines after a leaked document suggested the health ministry was blaming Brussels.
In a draft agenda for a summit of regional health chiefs after cases ballooned due to holiday gatherings, the central government was critical of the EU, El Mundo reported earlier in the day, quoting the leaked document.
"It is the European Union that negotiates and signs the contracts, that is in charge of tracking them and making sure they are correctly fulfilled," it quoted the government as saying in the document.
