The 48 Best Watches for Men 2021
Our editors pick their favourite new and upcoming watches from big Swiss brands and under-the-radar newbies

2021! The beginning of a brand new era which... feels a lot like the last. Your enervation is warranted. But empty fuel tanks aren't universal. In Switzerland, those big-ticket watch brands don't let a little pandemic get them down. On the contrary, our 2021 is already shaping up to be a banner year for great new watches.
Granted, said watch brands plan and schedule their big releases years in advance. And the Swiss are nothing if not punctual (it's not an unusual sight to see every single lab-coated watchmaker at their workspace at 9am on the dot), so it comes as little surprise that they've got good stuff lined up – really, actually, genuinely good stuff from Rolex, Tag Heuer, Breitling and so on.

Watches are bought to mark special milestones and occasions — graduation, a birth, an anniversary. But watches themselves also mark great milestones in human history. And this cannot be truer for the Omega Speedmaster. The chronograph, born in 1957, found its calling as a piece of essential NASA-qualified equipment that accompanied NASA astronauts to the moon on the Apollo 11, and also helped bring NASA astronauts back to earth on the aborted Apollo 13 mission.
Since then, many of us consider the Speedmaster Moonwatch sacred — nothing sparked more joy than when Omega revived the legendary Calibre 321 in 2019. The Calibre 321 was the original column wheel movement that powered the very first Speedmaster in 1957. Through tomography scanning, Omega was able to derive the new Calibre 321 that stayed true to the original version. The Speedmaster Calibre 321 “Ed White” in stainless steel, released that same year, instantly became a grail watch for collectors.

Omega's Latest Moonwatch Shines With the Caliber 3861

Text size
Omega kicked off the new year by upgrading one of watchmaking’s true icons, the Speedmaster Moonwatch, with the caliber 3861, a state-of-the-art movement delivering Master Chronometer performance that meets the highest standards of precision and magnetic-resistance in the industry. The 3861 will replace the workhorse Calibre 1861 in standard production Moonwatches after five decades.
The new Speedmaster MoonwatchMaster Chronometer lineup consists of eight new 42mm models. In stainless steel with a black dial, you can choose between a sapphire crystal version on strap (US$6,800) or bracelet (US$7,150), and a Hesalite crystal (a tough, clear acrylic that is flatter) on nylon fabric strap (US$5,950) or bracelet (US$6,300).

Omega's updated Speedmaster is the latest space-ready Moonwatch

There are very few iconic watches. Fewer still that enjoy instant recognition well beyond the confines of watch aficionados. Omega's Speedmaster Moonwatch is, by any estimation, in this group.
Now Omega has updated this classic with a new, Master Chronometer-certified movement for 2021. Offering resistance to magnetic fields reaching 15,000 gauss, the co-axial calibre 3861 is housed inside an asymmetrical case much like the one found on the fourth-generation Moonwatch, the model worn on the Moon first by Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

Omega announced an upgraded version of the Moonwatch calibre back in March 2019 as the 3861 was first seen in the gold Apollo 11 Anniversary Limited Edition. Since then, it's powered 2019's Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition in stainless steel and 2020s "Silver Snoopy" 50th Anniversary Speedmaster. But, crucially, only from now can it be found in the standard-production Moonwatch with a 50-hour power reserve, from £5,100.

Omega Speedmaster: the new Moonwatch has landed

The single best thing about this watch: It’s the one they wear to space. In 2024, NASA will send another pair of astronauts to the moon—including the first woman to land on that big hunk of cheese—as part of the Artemis Program. Teams are being sorted out, plans for a base camp on the moon’s surface have been unveiled, and presumably a partnership with Booking.com is on the horizon. When those astronauts do make those small steps on the lunar surface, they’ll almost definitely be wearing this latest evolution of the Omega Speedmaster, the piece Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong had on their wrists for that first moonwalk nearly 52 years ago. And this new piece tweaks small aesthetic details while overhauling the inner workings. The watch takes the baton from what was known as the Speedmaster 1861—so called for the movement inside—that Omega produced for decades. Today marks the dawn of the Moonwatch 3861 era.
