Famous Fund hopes to raise $500,000 in virtual gala

There is a huge push to help Baltimore City restaurants in danger of closing. A virtual gala that could give a now Famous Fund enough money to keep more business is alive through the winter. “I’m hoping that we can just crush it and raise a lot of money for the fund,” said Kris Ruhling, presidet of Great 8’s Memorabilia .Ruhling is a Baltimore native who is passionate about keeping city restaurants alive during the pandemic. He’s organized a fundraiser Saturday night -- A virtual gala to save Baltimore restaurants.“Special guest appearances from Eric DeCosta, Jonathan Ogden, Buck Showalter, Trey Mancini, Spencer Horsman, who is a a great magician who owns a bar in Federal Hill called Illusions, who was on America‘s Got Talent. We only started out as two hours and so many people stepped up and want to help out, we had to add a third hour,” Ruhling said. The livestream virtual gala is Saturday night from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. featuring more than a half dozen musical performances by local artist and a silent auction hosted by 98 Rock. The proceeds benefit The Famous Fund launched by Jimmy’s Famous Seafood to help struggling restaurants in Baltimore City. In less than three weeks, it’s raised nearly $400,000.“Unfortunately, we are far from finished, because we have a stack of applications that you wouldn’t believe from places that are on the verge of closing and just holding on until hopefully the warmer months,” said John Minadakis, founder of the Famous Fund. Already, the fund has helped 30 different restaurant owners. The new goal is 50.“It’s very heartbreaking. We’ve been releasing the videos when they get the good news from celebrities and actually, we just became a nonprofit, so we’re going to start asking bigger corporations to really step up and write those checks for us,” Minadakis said. They’re hoping for big donations Saturday night with a goal to get the Famous Fund to $500,000 and beyond for restaurants still only open at 25% capacity.“Yeah, 25% is fantastic, but it’s like fixing windows in a house that has been burning for six weeks. The damage is already been done, so anything we raise, anything you can give is going to be a true blessing,” Minadakis said. You can find out more information here.
